Virgin Islands Activities - Golf and Tennis

The Virgin Islands are home to four golf courses, two of which are well known for their challenging holes. There are no courses on St. John or Water Island. St. Thomas is home to Mahogany Run Golf Course and St. Croix offers the best golf options with three courses; Carambola, Buccaneer and The Reef. St. Croix’s courses often attract visitors on St. Thomas and St. John to plan a day trip to St. Croix to play golf.

St. Thomas – Mahogany Run Golf Course
Mahogany Run, opened in 1980, is a challenging course designed by George and Tom Fazio. There are 18 beautiful holes laid out on a 6,022 yard, par-70 championship course in a lovely valley overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The most well known holes at Mahogany Run make up the devils triangle; three tough holes perched on a cliff. The course has recently had a multi-million dollar renovation which included a brand new desalination plant and irrigation system which guarantees optimal playing throughout the year, regrassed greens and renovated bunkers. Informal scratch tournaments go on throughout the year where visitors can play against local players. Mahogany Run is open to the public and is accommodating to hotel and cruise ship guests.

Prices depend on time of year and time of day and can range from $50 to $105 for greens and 1/2 the cart fee. Rental clubs are around $35 per set and shoes between $10-$15. Prices are subject to change. There are packages for golf enthusiast that plan to play for 3 or more days during their vacations. Groups are welcome and special tournaments with prizes can be arranged. The pro shop is fully stocked with brand name merchandise including Ashworth, Izod, Monterrey Club, Callaway and Gear. Quality rental clubs are available. Tee times for groups of less than twelve are taken 48 hours in advance at: (340)777- 6006 ext. 1 or (800) 253-7103.

St. Thomas - Herman E. Moore Golf Course
You can practice your swing and putt while on vacation at the Herman E. Moore Golf Course, located at the University of the Virgin Islands. It is open to the public. There are no holes or facilities, golfers mainly use the course to practice putting and driving.

St. Croix – Carambola Golf Course
Carambola Golf Course was built by Laurence Rockefeller and designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. The par-72 course winds through a deep valley. Bright tropical plants, tall palm trees and small lakes make the course very attractive as rolling terrain, wind and some 100 bunkers make for a stern test of golfing skill. Although the course can be quite challenging it does provide options for all skill levels to enjoy. The facilities include a clubhouse, practice putting green, driving range and pro shop. For more information, call (340)778-5638.

St. Croix – Buccaneer Golf Course
The Buccaneer golf course, designed by Bob Joyce, is an 18-hole course that sprawls across much of the resort’s 340 acres. From the hilltop buildings all the way down to the shoreline this course is beautiful and known as one of the most scenic on St. Croix. The attractive site is also very challenging with a par-70 course encompassing 5,810 yards worth of fairways, bunkers and water hazards. Recent renovations include the addition of a three-hole walking course, water station and landscaping improvements.

Buccaneer Golf Course is open to the public. There is a fully stocked pro shop. Tee times should be scheduled at least two days in advance. Golfers may play until sunset. Motorized two-person carts are available and walking the course is permitted. Visit them online for more information: Golf at the Buccaneer

St. Croix – The Reef Golf Course
The Reef is for those golfers less inclined to take on the more challenging 18-hole courses or those looking for a more casual game. The Reef Golf Course, located in Teague Bay, offers nine holes of enjoyable golf. The course spans some 3,100 yards of beautifully maintained fairways and greens. Nestled in a valley below The Reef Villas on the north-eastern end of St. Croix, the course offers a good golfer a moderate challenge, while its open layout also allows beginners to enjoy the game. Both riding and pull carts are available for an additional fee. For more information, call (340)773-8844.

Tennis in the Virgin Islands
Tennis, whether for leisure or competition, can be enjoyed at several locations on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. Many of the hotels have tennis courts, however, if your hotel does not and you want to indulge in a set or two, than you can go to a hotel that does have tennis courts.
