A quick glimpse of its verdant hills jutting out impressively from the wide expanse of blue is all that most visitors see of the West End of St. Thomas. And that's only if they had a window seat! Located west of the airport, this area doesn't get many visitors. Residents are a rarity too; just around 5% of the population lives out West. One main road weaves north then south through this off-the-beaten-track area, a smattering of houses here and there. A few side roads lead to beaches that deliver a jackpot of solitude; natural, remote, the perfect setting for daydreams of shipwrecks and castaway fantasies.
Some of the West End’s shores are only accessible by sea like Perseverance Bay, Santa Maria and Hendricks Bay. A dirt road leads to the creamy sands and rocky outcrops of Stumpy Bay. The pebbled cove, Fortuna Bay, is accessed by a paved road. And the striking double-sided beach at Mermaid’s Chair, part of the Botany Bay Preserve, can be visited on foot. (Detailed descriptions of these beaches are not currently available.)
Getting Around: Visiting the West End of St. Thomas by taxi requires planning. A rental car will allow you to explore the area.
