1. I have a question about a ferry, who do I call?

In this section you will find the ferry routes and the ferry options including the name and telephone number of the ferry company operating the route. You can call them with questions.

2. Do ferries run on holidays, i.e. Christmas and Thanksgiving?

The ferry between St. Thomas and St. John does operate on holidays. The ferry to Water Island does not run on some holidays, see schedule for more details. Ferries to the BVI do operate on holidays.

3. From the St. Thomas airport, which is the closest ferry to get to St. John?

There are two ferry departure points on St. Thomas for passenger ferries bound for St. John. They are Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. Charlotte Amalie is closest to the St. Thomas Airport, it’s about 2.2 miles. St. Thomas Airport to the Red Hook ferry is about 10 miles. Distance aside, look at the schedules to decide what works for your itinerary.  The Charlotte Amalie schedule has three departures per day; the Red Hook ferry to St. John runs every hour on the hour from early morning to midnight.

4. From the Cruise Ship dock on St. Thomas, which is the closest ferry to get to St. John?

There are two ferry departure points on St. Thomas for passenger ferries bound for St. John. They are Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. And there are two cruise ship docks on St. Thomas, West India Co and Crown Bay – both of which are within Charlotte Amalie area. Therefore the Charlotte Amalie ferry is the closest. Distance aside, look at the schedules to decide what works for your itinerary.  The Charlotte Amalie schedule has three departures per day; the Red Hook ferry to St. John runs every hour on the hour from early morning to midnight.

5. Do we need reservations?

For the St. John ferry you generally do not need a reservation, unless you have a very large group. For the Water Island ferry, reservations are required for the night trips, see schedule for more information. For BVI ferries reservations are generally not required but some of the BVI ferries will take a reservation. Reservations are required for ferry to Anegada in the BVI.

6. We left something on the ferry, is there a lost and found?

The telephone number for each ferry operator is listed on this page above the prices/schedules. Call the appropriate ferry to inquire about your lost item.

7. What is capacity of the Water Island ferry? I have a big group.

The Water Island ferry can accommodate 25 passengers. If you have a big group you should call in advance to give them notice.

8. Are there private ferry or boat options; water taxis?

Yes, there are private boat or water taxi options. For more information visit: Water Taxis in the USVI.

9. I am arriving late in St. Thomas and will miss the last ferry to St. John… or to BVI; what are my options?

If you will miss the last ferry connection to your destination your options are to stay in a hotel on St. Thomas and catch the ferry on the next day of operation; to take a water taxi; and for the BVI you can also take an Inter-Island Airline.
