Sending package to Red Hook

July 20, 2009 08:25PM

We are coming to Crystal Cove (Hi to BillD) in December ... want to ship a package that will be there when we arrive. The package will contain goodies like ground coffee, dishwasher and laundry soap, spices for cooking and stuff like that. Believe me, the price for this stuff on-island can be exhorbitant. Plus, you don't need that much laundry detergent where you want to buy a standard container... Anyway, want to mail this so I can pickup in or around Red Hook. I have never done this before ... do I just send package addressed to myself care of General Delivery or what?

Email Red Hook Mail Service at paradiseconnection@yahoo.com and ask about the GD service. I know you can send mail to them for a $10 charge. They probably have something in that line for packages also.

Or ask Crystal Cove if you can send directly to them. If you send it GD for the regular PO you will wind up waiting in line at Sugar Estates Post Office and not be very happy about it.

i will second what pamela says... in my experience, most rental companies have a process in place to make this easy for you.

i highly recommend a courier service such as ups or fedex, or express mail. if you have enough time, priority mail with delivery confirmation is another option.

just contact your managers, and ask them the addressing convention to ensure that your package arrives with no confusion and everyone from mail carriers to the staff at the property will know that it's for you!

best to you,
anita.

I just sent a priority package to the states this morning -$11.05 - flat rate medium box.
It would not seem to be very cost effective - I am sure I can get a small dish soap, can of coffee and small detergent for $11 - here in STT - just pack the spices.

Bear in mind - UPS considers us an international destination and charges accordingly. Fed Ex is not open on Saturdays.

And Priority Mail is NOT guaranteed. Although I've had successes with Priority Mail packages arriving in timely fashion (i.e. within a week) there have been MANY occasions when I've waited as long as two months for something to arrive. Methinks they sometimes strap them on to an albatross with a lousy sense of direction ...

As exit zero says, you can certainly purchase small containers here of the kinds of things you're describing which will cost you less than the cost of shipping. If your shopping experiences have been confined to such as Marina Market then total sticker shock is in order but there ARE less expensive alternatives. Cheers!

We send quite a few packages (50+) to the USVI every month. Our usual carrier is USPS Priority Mail which can take anywhere from three days to three weeks and does not offer real time tracking - usually 5 to 7 days though. Fedex Economy Express is a little more pricey but extremely predictable and they offer real time tracking which USPS does not. I think someone offered the contact for Red Hook Mail Service which is where some of our goods wind up going and they're very good to work with.

The box I sent priority mail Tues from STT is sitting in my Dads stateside post office this morning at 8 am - less than 40 hours - go figure!

They fed the albatross an energy drink.

Sending packages from here has never been the problem; it's receiving packages here that can take forever.

True and it's very frustrating at times. Anything I've ever sent to the mainland via Priority has arrived in 2-3 days but the opposite direction is the problem.

True and December is not a good time to be sending stuff down here by mail. Try Fed Ex and the mail service or the condo.

Funny mail story, I had a sailor with a real sweet tooth going 'round the world. We packed up all sorts of candies, cookies and sweets and sent to him to meet him TAHAITI. A year later we received them back as undeliverable - they had gone to HAITI! Some of the candy was still good!
