Special occasion restaurant in St Thomas
November 13, 2009 11:41PM
Can anyone recommend a truly GREAT restaurant where my friend and I can celebrate her 50th b-day in March? We are both "foodies" and appreciate fine dining. We don't mind paying the price if it is quality food and atmosphere. So far I have looked at Havana Blue, Agave Terrace, Bluewater and Herve. I think Havana Blue looks lovely...does anyone have any input on which of these, or somewhere else, that might make a truly memorable evening? We want outside seating, great food and service. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

We own a condo at Point Pleasant and frequent the Agave.
Good food, reasonable prices and an incredible view.

Also, we like Robert's at the Elysian.

But for outdoor dining with a view it's the Agave.

Happy 50th!

I'm a huge fan of Banana Tree Grille at Bluebeard's Castle for a special occasion. Consistently good food (the chef has been with the owners for over 20 years) and service, reasonable prices, an excellent wine selection and a gorgeous view overlooking town and the harbor. Ask for balcony seating, tell them it's a special occasion and you'll have a wonderful evening!

Outside seating, great food and service -- I also recommend Banana Tree Grill overlooking the harbor.

Another vote for Banana Tree Grille. If the view is important, Mafolie, way above town and the harbour, has a wonderful wide-spanning view. The restaurant's food and service have always been fine, but I don't think it's as fine as that at Banana Tree.

I vote for Roberts, Agave, Bannana in that order.

If it is still open, Karen and I had a wonderful dinner at the Lobster Grille at the Bolongo resort. You are on the second level and overlook the pool and beach. The waiter was very good, but not intrusive at all. Some might have called him standoffish (sp?). Anyway, we experienced a very good and PRIVATE dinner. It was just what the doctor ordered. If you are lucky, you might arrive during the timeshare welcome party. FREE RUM and appetizers for all!!!!! We did not stay at that resort, but, we felt like family for those few moments. The staff on duty were very attentive. We will definitely go there again.

Thanks so much everyone for the tips! I'll discuss these spots with my friend and see what she says. It's so helpful to have advice from those of you "in the know"...very cool. Thanks again!

My first Choice - I have to agree with Agarve's at Point Pleasant. The drive up to the restaurant is an experience and the views are just wonderful. Make sure you get there b/4 sunset so you can enjoy the view. I forgot the bartenders name but he will certainly take very good care of you. The King Crab and Felet Mignon are great. Price for two will be around $115.00

My second choice would be Havana Bleu and Moring Star Beach. Great selection of Cuba fare. Price for two will be around $150.00.

If you like Italian you may also want to try Virgilio's downtown. It's just two blocks up the side street from the Greenhouse. Price for two will be around $110.00

Congrats on your 50th. We have 10 years to go.

You can't go wrong with Banana Tree Grille, but we also love Room with a View which is also at Bluebeard's Castle.

Happy 50th! You couldn't be celebrating in a more WONDERFUL place!!!!

I would suggest either of these two restaurants. I myself have been to the Agave Terrace many times and was not impressed. The service was inconsistent and the food overpriced.

My personal favorite is the Banana Tree Grille. Call and ask for the owner Liz. She will set you up with a table by the railing and a gorgeous view of Charlotte Amalie Harbour. Also ask for Chris to be your server. He has been there for over 20 years and is the best server I have ever experienced.

The food is awesome and ALWAYS consistently awesome. The prices are very good as well.

For a second special occasion, I would go to 13. It doesn't have quite the view that Banana Tree does, but the food has always been good. We went there twice on our last 7 day visit. Lobster Special night is Thursday night and it is a real deal.

I would suggest Room With a View. Such a magical place with all the twinkling lights. Food and service is amazing. They offer a small area outside, but the inside is practically all windows so it's even nice inside. Every year we look forward to a special evening there...

Blue Havana is very pretty too, but my husband actually left hungry! Even after a full course meal.

The Aggave is not what it use to be. Past few years we had horrible meals and service. They are no longer on our list of restaurants we visit.

BlueMoon Cafe is very nice. Right on the beach with all open air. The food was very good too.

Romanos. Awesome food and service, but if you want atmosphere with a tropical feel this may not be the place for you. It's more like a place you would find in NYC. Lot's of art work too.

Friends just went to the new Old Stone Farmhouse and raved about it. It has always been one of the most beautiful settings. New chef, new menu. Bring wheelbarrows of money... They even have a sommelier! cool

After much consideration we have decided to go to Banana Tree Grille for the big event. I have a reservation on the railing overlooking the harbor with Chris for our server....Thanks to everyone for your input on this! We are so excited and will be there in just a few weeks...cool

Enjoy your celebration! Tell Liz that the Old Tart sends her love and you'll get a good "Liz Laugh" from her!

Try Oceana in Frenchtown.

Or if you really want to do something special. Go over to St. John on the ferry and go to ZoZo's at Gallows Point. It's by far the best restaurant in the two islands, jmo! It's w/ in walking distance from the ferry in Cruz Bay. Awesome sunset views! www. zozos.net.

From one 'Old Tart" to another, thank you!!big grin
It was a tough call and I appreciate the many sugggestions. We'll only be in ST for two days b4 cruise but I'm hoping to check out some of these other places, too. That said, hopefully I will fit into my bathing suit after all that fine dining!
