Hi

I have been to St Thomas many times in the last 15 years. The last time being a few years ago. Taxi rates were always so good that I felt no need for a rental car. I have booked a two week stay at the Elysian Beach resort for this next winter.

I notice from researching the web and resort posts that to get a cab from the airport to the resort is $90.00 which is really high for my budget. I thought this use to be around $20.00. I am traveling by myself. Has something happened in the last few years that have made rates go up or has this always been the cost? Is there any budget cab that is on the island that is helpful for someone like me who needs a lower transportation rate? Would anyone have any helpful tips on transportation to and from the resort? Thanks happy

Taxi rates to Elysian from the airport are $12 in a taxi with other people loaded by the dispatcher at the airport taxi stand.

No idea where you got the $90 rate from! The taxi rates are posted on this site. Go to the "St Thomas" (or St Croix or St John) bar at the top of this page and scroll down to "transportation" and you'll find them right there. As you'll see, the 1-person rate from the airport to Elysian is $18 per person. Add in tip and any baggage charges and you'll be there at the $20 average rate you're used to. The rates haven't changed in several years. Enjoy a wonderful vacation!

that is for a private taxi, that does not pick up other passengers, and is dedicated only to you and those in your party. i see that someone has posted not only the rate chart but also the notes below which state this.

Hi

Many thanks to everyone who has posted here for me.

I know it shows the Elysian rate as low but then at the bottom it shows a private cab of $90.00. In my case I fly in on a Thursday and out on a Monday through a direct WorldMark by WN exchange. So I am fearful that I won't get any group rate, but will get the higher private rate. I was not aware it was $90.00. It just seems like that is really high as even a tour is much less than that and takes longer.

On a recent Elysian resort review someone said he had taken a cab to the airport at the higher rate. I know in the upper States rates for that same distance are much lower in a Taxi. I'm not knocking Taxi drivers as I've had some really great ones on the island in the past.

Maybe I'll just need to ask the driver if I can be put in a cab with others and get dropped off at the end of the line to get a lower rate? confused

You do not need to be part of any group to share a common taxi -- as I mentioned: tell the taxi dispatcher at the airport your destination and he will put you in a van with people who are all headed East - you may be 1st or last off the taxi depending on where the other folks are headed. It will be $12 as stated on the rate sheet + $2 a bag as shown.

I know I have asked this question in the past and sorry for the repeat. Since I got two different answers last time I will try again. I need to take a taxi for 2 people on a Sunday morning in September from Mafolie to the airport for a 8:10AM flight.

What time would we have to leave and is the taxi considered a private taxi or just regular fare with maybe a $2 /pp up charge? Last time I asked I was told both options were correct.

Thanks.

you would be able to get to the airport within 20 minutes in a private taxi. there is no way to estimate time with a non-private taxi, as it would be able to pick up or drop off passengers along the way (hence the much lower rate). my guess is that at the time of morning you are traveling, there is little chance of much extra action.

you should be able to schedule a car in advance, but that may be considered "private" because you are taking a driver out of circulation with an appointment. if you call as you desire the car, whomever is in the area would be able to get you... but there may be some extra delay as that person takes care of current passenger(s) on the way to you.

so, with a number of variables at work, it's best to check with your concierge or guest services person to determine the norm for the place you are leaving.

best to you,
anita.

I had a taxi driver charge me higher than the non-private rate and when I questioned him, he said it was because I called the dispatch and asked for a taxi. Now.....I did call and ask for a taxi but never did I specify a "private" taxi.....I supposed because I was 'silent' on the words "private" versus "non-private" was the reason? Is it an automatic if you call the taxi dispatch that they automatically apply the "private" taxi rate? I was perturbed at the time but let it go but I would really like to know if there's something I should actually say when I call to make sure there's a taxi waiting at the taxi stand.

i will have to ask about that. if anyone else knows please post. as soon as i know, i will post. i'll have to ask someone at the taxicab commission itself.

Copied from the VI Now Taxi Rate Sheet:

"Radio/Phone Call: One person, the fare plus one third of the basic fare. More than one person; add $1.00 to each passenger."

[Also from the rate sheet:

Waiting charges: $1.00 per minute. First five minutes free.

Radio/Phone Call: One person, the fare plus one third of the basic fare. More than one person; add $1.00 to each passenger.
Between midnight and 6:00am, there shall be an additional charge of $2.00 per person.

Any person requesting a taxi exclusively for themselves are as follows:
Airport to Red Hook: $90 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers add $15 for each additional person).
Within Town Limits: $55 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers add $7 for each additional person).
Airport to Frenchman's Reef, Limetree or Bolongo: $65 for 1-4 passengers, (5 or more passengers will pay an additional fare each).

]So if you "call" at 5:30 am for a taxi to take you and a friend from Malfolie to airport at 6 am, what do you pay?

1) After hours private
$65.00 private rate
$04.00 after hours rate
$04.00 bags
$73.00 total

2) or if they dodn't nail you for the private rate
$10.00 standard rate
$08.00 extra person
$04.00 after hours
$05.00 call fee
$04.00 bags
$31.00

3) or maybe you'll just be charged the pr1vate rate
$65.00

4) or maybe the taxi will pick you up at 6, then drive around and pick-up 9 other folks from various other hotels located arround the island
$10.00 standard
$08.00 extra person
$04.00 bags
$22.00

This is one of those situations where you prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

What I find most annyoing are the "waiting charges". If the taxis charge waiting, why don't they credit back "waiting" for all the time passengers spend sitting in hot cab "waiting" " for the drivers to fill-up or finish lunch or arrgue about who goes where, etc?
