I've been wondering the same thing. I only became aware of the changes two days ago. And we made reservations back in the first part of the year. We're a good-sized group and staying in the midst of a construction site may be an issue. If there's anyone with some firsthand experience since the changes were made, that would be very helpful. I plan on calling them tomorrow.
We got in early this morning (Sunday, 11-27) after camping at Cinnamon Bay for a week. Various parts of the place are under construction. The restaurant is closed - they informed us of this a few days in advance of our arrival. We made do by going to Dolphin Market to get groceries.
Overall, we didn't have a problem. Granted our request for more towels was denied, even though it had been raining for 3 days and we had no dry towels left. Fortunately it stopped the next day so we could air-dry stuff outside. Still, it was frustrating. There was staff around during the week evaluating crowds on the beach, drainage issues after the rain, etc. The cabins and bathrooms were open and working as expected.
If you're going or planning on going in the next year or so, I'd be prepared for a few growing pains. You may have to take a more circuitous route around construction areas, deal with the sounds of hammers and saws during the day. But it's not that bad. Talking to another camper, he was under the impression that the company that previously managed Maho was taking over and the vision for the campground was to upgrade the facilities to make it more along the line of Maho or Concordia.
If you made reservations earlier this year, they are supposed to honor the reservation. Have you old confirmation number, deposit information and dates handy when you call. They have not gotten that straight for our group reservation yet. We are going the end of April next year. No new reservations will be taken until after 2/1/17. The new group running the Cinnamon Bay Resort and Campground ( that's the new name) is a new company out of California. This is their first venture. Thy might hire some people from Maho ( the chef was mentioned) and there will be some ecco-tents but it will not be run by or be Maho. The existing cottages will be torn down and replaced. The design has not yet been approved, but if you check out the new website, you will see that the proposed design looks more like the Westin (IMO) . If you think you might want to cancel your reservation, be sure to ask about the new refund policy and fees.
I loved that it was rustic and simple. Of course improvements needed to be made so we will have to wait and see how much it swings to resort and away from campground. My group has already decided to look into a villa for 2018 instead of cottages.
