Hi, We are traveling to St Thomas (our first visit) from 1/15 for 5 days - 2 of us with our 5 yr old and a 4 month infant. We are staying in a Superior Suite in Point Pleasant Resort. We rented through a condo owner we found on vrbo - anybody stayed in this condo named "Toucan Dream"? We are getting what seems like a very good deal from the owner for this time of the year and want to make sure it is ok. We plan to rent a car to drive around. Reviews about Pt Pleasant in trip advisor seem mixed - great location, great views but slightly older property (believe some upgrade is happening now?), a bad stench near some condos, etc. Any info appreciated before we finalize our decision. Thx

Hi - we stayed at Point Pleasant two years ago and loved it. Yes, i t a little older, but very nice. We will be there in February and staying for a week with our four children. I know you will enjoy it.... Great idea to get rental car and drive around - must take trip to St John also - loved it and the ferry ride was not bad. Enjoy your time there...

We're owners of a condo at Point Pleasant.

All of the condos are individually owned and maintained by the owner. Most are very well maintained. It depends on the owner. We've been in about 20 of the condos and all were very good.

While we do not rent our unit out ourselves, we do participate in the "hotel plan" with Antilles Resorts. They have standards which all participants must meet. Antilles also provides daily maid service. It has been my experience that they do a very good job.

The property in general is undergoing a complete (external) update. New paint (note you are ocean front and maintenance is always ongoing), concrete steps (vs stone steps), the hotel lobby was just redone (great job) and the nature trail has pretty much been completed. The 3 pools were completely redone last year. The two restaurants, Agave (Gourmet) and Fungi's (beach front) are great.

The (closed) resort next door was just purchased by a local investor and will be opened (I hope soon) as a (5 star) Crown Plaza Resort. This should give some more "life" to the area. On the opposite side we have the (4 star) Wyndham Hotel.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about the unit that you're renting.

About the bad reviews on Tripadvisor.....well..... some people always have to complain about something. Read the reviews well to determine if their complaint is really something substantial or just a "nit picking item". I've read the reviews on Tripadvisor and find that a number of them are from people who rented the Jr. Suites (Studios) at discount off season prices and expected a Ritz Carlton suite (at $1,000. per night). I guess the $60. per night Jr. Suite was a little run down, but that's why it was $60. I know Antilles is trying to remove these units from the rental pool.

Hope this helps.

Thanks weiler & FI - useful info and we will go with Pt Pleasant. We plan to rent a car and go to St John - a question on car rentals. Hertz told me that I cannot take the car on the ferry to St John but I need to rent separately in St John. Does not make sense to me but they have such a restriction. I called Dollar who say it may be ok to take to St John but I need to call the airport counter in STT to confirm I can transport via ferry. Anybody heard of such restrictions?
Thanks

I believe that of the rental agencies at the airport only Avis & Budget allow you to take the car over to St. John.

We took an Avis rental to St. John on the barge once....and once was enough. I guess if you're staying on St. John it might make sense, but if you're only going for the day then the hassle is not worth it (imho). Standing in line and competing for space with other cars and trucks was a real ordeal. And if you miss the last barge back, for whatever reason, your car spends the night on St. John.

We take the passenger ferry over and use a taxi....there are usually only two of us so it makes economical and timely sense.

btw, we'll be at P.P. during your stay.

We stayed at Point Pleasant this past April and really enjoyed it. We got stuck with a Junior Suite that was eh (nothing else was available), but we still really had a nice time, and we'd definitely stay there again (but in a different room please! wink) Though we certainly didn't pay $60, we paid more than double that. wink We loved the 'natural' feeling of the resort. Loved that Pineapple Beach was fairly empty and quiet, LOVE the small Sugar Beach. Very quiet there, wonderful snorkeling to the left of the rocks. We loved the nature trail, and all the windy steps throughout..it felt like we were in a secret garden. I hope you enjoy your stay!

Are they changing all the stone steps to concrete? I hate to see that..I love the natural feeling and charm of the stone steps. Though I can see how it would be much safer with concrete ones. Loved all the little lizards darting about the steps. happy

G.A:

Most of the steps have been changed to concrete. Sorry, but they are trying to avoid accidents. I'm here for a month this time.

btw.....wireless is free in the lobby.
