Hi, last minute decision to travel from St. John to British Virgin Islands while we are staying in St. John. I need to get a passport to travel from St. John to the BV Islands. We are traveling in three weeks and therefore I need to get my passport application expedited. The problem is, I need some type of document indicating that I will be going from St. John to BV Islands in order for them to accept my "expedited" request. It's not like I have a flight document because it is only a day trip we will be taking there while we are in St. John. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get some type of itinerary/document stating that I have this plan so I can bring it with me to get my "expedited" passport? Thanks

Hello jcmmmc,

Flying to St. Thomas and continuing by ferry to the BVI is a popular choice for visitors. Most of the BVI ferries don't require reservations (or have online booking). Could you use your St. Thomas e-ticket and explain that you are continuing to the BVI by ferry? Maybe an email from the ferry company providing the details of the ferry route and reservations not required statement.

I think one or two of the ferries going to Tortola have online booking. If you are going to Tortola by ferry, you could book the ferry reservation and use the confirmation/receipt.

Other possibilities, if you are using a boat charter - would the booking confirmation from them work? Would a hotel reservation/confirmation work (one from a hotel in the BVI)?

Thank you for using VInow.com to help plan your visit to St. John and day trip to the BVI.

Quite honestly, I doubt you will have much chance to get an expedited passport in time. I was going to get one many years ago, but I discovered that it would be virtually impossible, and I was working with a time frame similar to yours.

Also, if you're just doing a day trip, I don't know that it would be compelling enough to satisfy the requirement. But I don't know what criteria are used.

As mentioned above, having some kind of ferry booking or other accommodation would be your best bet, but then you run the risk of reserving and paying for something you might not be able to use. As long as you can still cancel, then you could try that.

While I'm doubtful about your chances, I hope it all works out for you!

I'm sure I read this in a book or on here, but can't recall, but.... Do you need a passport for a day trip to the BVI? At the last minute I was looking at visiting The Baths. I understand it's out of the US. However one can walk from my state across to Mexico and not need a passport, if it's just a visit within a day.

Yes sorry, you now need a valid passport to enter the BVI. We did get our non-expedited passport renewal within 2 weeks recently (!) but that was a renewal...
It is definitely worth a visit, but for a nicer experience, and a good comparison between the USVI and BVI, plan to split your time (or spend all of it) on Tortola or VG to experience more of the beauty, as well as the people there.
