Rental cars are sky high! What happened to the $18 Hotwire deals? Budget wants $42/day + taxes and fees. Yikes!
Any suggestions? Coupon codes? websites?

Wow.

I use the airline's partner code. In my case it's American, but it makes no difference as they all give about the same discount. Then I save a bunch by taking a taxi to the Seaborne place on the waterfront, and picking the car up there. I can still return it to the airport. Don't forget to put in your Frequent Flier miles # to get FF miles for the rental, and check for a coupon code for more miles.

So:
Avis
discount code K817100
Pickup location T5S
Return location STT

Hi Blu:

Try: www.carrentals.com

or if you're a AAA member Hertz gives 10% off.

If you are a costco member (or probably any other warehouse club), their deals seem to be the best around. costco.com and click on travel, rental cars. They offer deals for avis, budget and others.

I find the site http://www.pointcarhire.com very helpful to compare and search the best car rental deals. You can also book a car with them online. They list the rental cars offered by top suppliers like Alamo, National and many others. Hope you will find a good deal with them.

Last year I payed $30/day, I went on Priceline and put in a ridiculously low bid/day $20 I think, and went up in $1 increments until it was accepted.

I have found all the rental rates to be about the same, although American Airline has been a few dollars cheaper.

Gerie,
Blu went with your suggestion. She was supposed to leave today, but USAir couldn't get her out until tomorrow, she is just so devastated she had to go visit the pool at the Ritz! LOL! I'll go visit with her at Sapphire in the morning!

What a horror! I hope I am never forced to spend an additional day because of an airline's inability to transport me. I certainly hope she had a few libations to help her get over her misery while soaking in the Ritz swimming pool.

Actually, it sounded like a wonderful restful tonic of a vacation for Blu, and I hope she enjoyed every single moment. Glad you got to take some time for yourself to hang with your buddy, Sherri.

We just rented 2 vehicles from Conrad Sutton on St. John last week (6/24/11-7/2/11), and NEVER AGAIN! First thing that happened was they gave me a Jeep Wrangler 4 door with about 7000 miles on it. Second day, I was on a switchback just after Trunk Bay and the transmission failed. Police helped, and discovered there was No (nada, none) transmission fluid in the vehicle. I called the number listed on the contract and told the woman who answered of the issue. Her response was "What did you do?". Really good customer service (NOT!). Conrad himself came with a replacement jeep (Liberty not 4dr wrangler) within 45 minutes. I'm thinking, that's pretty good. Then I go to return it and I get an attitude because THEY attached the replacement car paperwork to the wrong original contract.

On the second vehicle that my brother-in-law rented, when we returned it, they say to him there is a dent on the bumper that want there before. It was missed on the pre-inspection. I look at it and said, I followed him out of the lot when we picked it up and it was there already when we picked up the car. Then I get called a liar, multiple times. I ask to see the paperwork from the person that rented it before us to see if the dent was indicated on prior rentals... I was told they destroy all paperwork after the rental is complete... Yea Right! There was a pile 3-4" thick of prior rental forms on the desk. Now who is the liar?

NEVER AGAIN... Rude and in my opinion dishonest.
