ANY tips would be GREATLY appreciated!

We've never been to the Caribbean - so we feel pretty lost! Basically - we want a nice hotel or villa/condo, with 2 or 3 bedrooms and kitchenette and pool...close to a nice beach and shopping/restaurants/other things to do. Is there a particular section of the Island that is more kid friendly with nice beaches/calmer water? Any sections to avoid?

Would another island be better?
What's your favorite beach?

I'll take anything you got! Hehe!
Thanks so much!

The advantage of St Thomas over most other Caribbean destinations is there's a lot that's familiar yet a lot that isn't so the kids should be comfortable.

I would recommend the Best Western Emerald Beach hotel. It's on a nice, calm beach, and there's a small, public playground within walking distance. There's even a tiny water park that may or may not be open. They don't seem to adhere to their posted schedule all the time (welcome to the Caribbean!). There are a few restaurants within walking distance and even at least one or more local food vans if you want to try something different. The Island Beachcomber Hotel is right next door and has a very loyal fan base, but it's not as attractive on the exterior as Emerald Beach.

They're also close enough to The Butterfly Farm and tropical bird show which are popular with the kiddies.

Most people really like Coki Beach because of the excellent snorkeling, but there's no hotel on that beach. The hotels closest to Coki don't have great beaches. If you rent a car, you can easily drive there, but taxis will be available at Emerald Beach. Right next to Coki Beach is Coral World (they also own the Butterfly Farm) which the kiddies also love, because they get to touch so many sea creatures and see sting ray feedings, etc. More birds here, too! And iguanas.

Another hotel option might be Secret Harbor. I'm sure you'll get lots more opinions!

I would take a look on www.vrbo.com for condo rentalsl on the East end of the island. Sapphire is on the best beach but may not have large enough units for your family but Crystal Cove (also on Sapphire beach), Elysian and Cowpet could have what you're looking for. The East end of the island has the best beaches (Sapphire, Coki, Smith Bay Park, Secret Harbour) and is also where the Red Hook ferry terminal is located for a day trip to St John or even the BVI.

Do figure a rental vehicle into your budget. St Thomas isn't a "walking island" and while taxis are readily available they charge per person and the fares add up very quickly. We drive on the left in standard American vehicles but it doesn't take much to get used to as the maximum driving speed is 35MPH and one is usually going around 25!

Enjoy researching and do go through all the information right here on this site as there's tons offered. Cheers!

For a first visit with family in tow I would recommend you Google Bolongo Bay. They are family owned and have most everything onsite. They are between town and the east end, so fairly convenient. I second a car if you want to travel much but taxi's can be done if you are not planning much site seeing. My favorite beaches Coki, Sapphire and Magens in that order. Have Fun!

You might consider Water Island with children. Very quiet and kid friendly. Rental houses come with golf cart for transportation on the very quiet street. Easy to get to St Thomas for day outing--Coral World etc. Beaches on WI are very nice. Lots of harmless wildfile. We have 2 houses avail for vacation rental and have had many guests with children who love the island and houses. http://www.slowmocean.com

The only read thing to do for kids is related to water. So choose a great beach. Sapphire is the best. Go to VRBO and look for either Sapphire Resort or Crystal Cove. Then look for a two bedroom.
