My family (including 18 and 15 year old children) and sister are considering a week long trip to St. Thomas. Any lodging recommendations to accommodate 5 that is economical? Maybe a three bedroom condo or a rental house? We've priced hotels but it gets pricey for our family since one of our kids would stay with my sister and thus would have to split her room cost. Suggestions for area of St. Thomas to stay in, Red Hook?

If you want a dollar friendly alternative, check Villas at Sapphire Beach. They sleep 6 comfortably, but not all separate rooms. I can recommend a couple, pm me if interested.

For 2 bedrooms, I highly recommend where we stayed just in August -- this lady has 4 3 room units at the Elysian (Cowpet Bay) that are beautiful and perfect. By then all the onsite restaurants should be back up and running too. http://www.vrbo.com/181754

If you need 3 or 4 bedrooms, I would recommend VIP.rentals.inc who manage a bunch of condos also at Cowpet Bay, next door to the Elysian and they actually share the Elysian beach and pool. We're renting from them next July so they're not a known entity yet but if I didn't believe they were I wouldn't have sent in my deposit. Here is the link to the 4-bedroom: http://www.vrbo.com/149636

Hi--take a look at http://www.slowmocean.com 2 lovely house on Water Island. Water Island is just off the coast of St Thomas. Easily accessible by public ferry from Crown Bay Marina. Beautiful quiet and a great family oriented place. The cottage is probably not large enough for you. But Slow Mocean has lots of room, a great deck and great views. The house comes with a golf cart for use on Water Island.

There are 6 of us going in February 2012 and we are renting at the Elysian (3 bedrooms). Found it on www.vrbo.com and also check www.homeaway.com If you want more information let me know. I would recommend finding something soon if you are going during the prime time.

You mentioned you are interested in St. Thomas but many folks consider Water Island to be a wonderful alternative especially for families. Close enough to enjoy all the amenities that St. Thomas and St. John have to offer while you have your "home base" on the quiet and peaceful small island of Water Island. Honeymoon Beach on Water Island would be a fun place for you and your family to chill out and have fun - a great beach, Heidi Honeymoon Grill and Joe's Beach Bar. As Carolina mentioned, most villas on Water Island include a vehicle for transportation on Water Island. With your crew, sounds like Flamingo Point USVI's "split" floor plan with 4 bedrooms would accomodate everyone's space and privacy needs. Water Islanders know how to enjoy life ( http://www.waterislandwica.com/IslandLife) and we're very laid back. If you're for looking dinner, dancing, going out every night - Water Island may not meet your needs. But, then again.........it may be just what you're looking for in a vacation. If you're interested in Flamingo Point USVI, feel free to send PM. Good luck in your search!

I don't get everyone's fascination with Sapphire Beach. I thought Trunk Bay blew Sapphire away. And I absolutely love the Cowpet area.

Trunk on STJ and Sapphire on STT are entirely different from each other but I wouldn't agree that Trunk blows Sapphire away. Adverse sea conditions can affect even the most pristine snorkeling spots but Sapphire is heralded with good reason as one of the best snorkeling spots on STT. The Cowpet area is lovely but Sapphire wins hands down (with Secret Harbour a close second) if snorkeling off the beach right where you're staying is on the agenda!

Even among our party of 6, we were split on Trunk vs. Sapphire. Those more interested in taking in the overall beauty instead of snorkeling definitely preferred Trunk. Also, July is not high season so I can imagine that if it were, it would be mighty crowded and in that case, less desirable than Sapphire. When we went Sapphire had so much sea grass but I realize that is a changing thing. Still, Sapphire is nothing to sneer at as it was very lovely and beautiful. Besides, Sapphire has THOR!
