Why is airfare so expensive? Any advice on cheap tickests to/from STJ? I am traveling in Spetmeber but have not purchased the airfare yet. Still searching for the lowest prices available.

Thanks

It usually drops in the summer. You'll find good deals for September travel, but they probably won't come out til Summer.

I am happy to be paying $495 PHL to STT for next month. I expect to pay around $300 in summer and September.

September is hurricane season in the VI. There will be deals. You should wait on it, IMO. Also, keep checking for deals at the Westin for Sept. I know they list off-season rates, but they may also come out with a special special 😉

Some months ago I took exception to your criticism of a tourist who posted a message expressing concern about crime in St. Thomas. As you may recall I referred to you as someone who "shoots the messenger" when you don't agree with their point of view. You took strong exception to that. From that time forward, I have continued to read posts on nearly a daily basis, including yours. In all fairness, I must tell you that by and large you are one of the most knowledgeable and helpful posters on this message board. You offer good suggestions and sound advice about virtually everything. You really know the USVI and I've learned alot reading your posts. Thank you for your contributions. P.S. My wife and I will be returning to St. Thomas on April 29th for 2 weeks. This will be our 8th trip over the past 10 years, and our first 2-week stay. We will be reading the message board with even greater interest between now and then. Best wishes to you, Bluwater.

Keep checking the airfares, almost daily. I check Travelocity, when I find a good price I'll go to that airlines site and will get the flight for a bit less ($20-25) Last year we found airfare from Chicago to STT for Nov. travel for less than $400 r/t.

Happy hunting 🙂

pnut:

Depends where you are travelling from.

We fly out of Newark, NJ or Atlantic City, NJ.

Continental flys non-stop from Newark. I've seen prices as low as $350. R/T to STT.

Another avenue is Newark to San Juan (Continental was $188. R/T) and connect to American Eagle (San Juan to STT). In December 2005 the total cast was about $340. R/T. each.

Spirit Air out of Atlantic City had a special about a month ago. We paid $89. O/W + Taxes & Fees for a total of $231. each R/T.

Hope this helps.

WH,

You are such a kind person to write that to me and I do appreciate it. I do remember the exchange and I know I am sometimes a little too passionate about my beliefs (ask my parents, my boyfriend or my ex husband). I really mean no harm and have tried to learn to temper the expression of my opinions.

I'm really glad to read that you are returning to STT in April! It is just around the corner. Happy planning!! Two weeks - wooohoooo! Now that's a vacation. You two are going to be soft noodles by the time you return. Hope you aren't planning to immediately retun to work. It's a shock to the system 😉

FI-

You caught the AC deal just in time. I checked just after that and it was up to somehting like $500 r/t. I've heard that the AC Airport is so much easier to navigate that Philly Intl or Newark....easy check in, quick and effecient security checks, easy layout.

Is the parking free there?

$5.00 per day....but close to the terminal.

March will be my first Spirit trip. My daughter has taken them several times to FL.

Spirit's promotions were great unless you want to fly Easter week. I did get fare around $500.00 but as a teacher having off that week and sitting on the beach is priceless. To fly out of Pomona is an added convenience and am thrilled to be going to St. Thomas for the 4th time. Keep looking at prices and there is usually a deal.

I scored a perfect deal a week and a half ago out of Denver for $262 round trip! With taxes, it came to $310. My wife and I weren't planning on taking a trip, but when I saw that, we figured why not. Now I can't wait. It was on travelocity, Wed-Mon at some good times and one layover in Atlanta.

Hi Bluwater
Can you tell me how is Point Pleasant Resort holding up. Though it's older, I remember the beautiful views, great food and nice trade winds. Since my plans are to possibly stay there in July, the winds would be welcome. Walking the hills will be no problem,
and if I remember correctly, not much beach. The other studio I might be interested in is Caribia cottage. Has harbor/ town views and private pool. The draw back is no a/c, July can be pretty warm. Any input would be appreciated. Oh yes, as far as Sapphire House, that's expensive for absolutely no view.

Thanks for all you do

Sleeper 18,

Sorry, I have no idea about Point Pleasant. I have never stayed there. I wish I had and I would like to. People seem to enjoy it very much. The only downside is the beach not being easily reached, as I understand it. The PP suites are hillside over the water. I have seen them from the Coki beach area/End of Water Bay.
They look very alluring perched up there.

I checked them for this coming trip of mine and they wanted more than I want to spend, so I will reserve them for another time.

If you go, please share with us when you return. Point Pleasant deserves more play on this forum.

Don't we have PP owners on this board? I recall that someone bought there or was about to buy there. Might be worth trying to rent directly via the owner, if they are allowed to.

Sleeper 18:

Point Pleasant is undergoing a restoration. We love the place.

PP still has the great views and trade winds. If you go be sure to ask for a hill top unit...best views. The beaches are so so, but you can easily walk to Coki Beach.

Sleeper18:

Have you tried calling direct? We did on our first visit and got a (much) better price than the published rate.
