Hi,
I would like to hear from anyone that knows the beaches of St. Thomas. Are there any quiet off the beaten path beaches? I'm going in February and would like to avoid the run of the mill tourist beaches if possible.
Thanks,
Eric

We have loads of beaches that are not usually frequented by tourists. Some are difficult to get to unless you have a car, though. Taxis won't visit some of these beaches. A few good ones would be Platform, Neltjberg, Hull, Lindqvist, Limetree, Secret Harbor, Cowpet...Although the last 3 hace resorts on tem, they are never too busy. Avoid Magens and Coki if you want to avoid crowds. Even though Magens IS one of the top ten most beautiful beaches in the world, according to National Geographic Magazine, it does get busy.

Hi There,

I'll elaborate on some of the beaches Marty mentions because some are among my favorites.

Secret Harbour, while becoming more crowded in the past year or two is still pretty much a quieter, smaller beach with lots of shade, really good snorkeling and agreat little beach bar.

Hull is a great place for a picnic, usually only a handful of folks there......some fishing boats.....and a real "island" type place a short walk away at the Hull Bay Hideaway......great burgers.

Dorothea is really picturesque but with water too rough to swim in. Only a couple of condos nearby so it's almost always deserted. A little hard to find though the first time you are there.

Brewers, while not out of the way exactly, doesn't seem to get much tourist traffic. When we've been there it's been primarily locals and UVI students. A great place to look at shells on the beach, barbecue something to eat or pick something up at one of the food trucks that are there.

While Lindqvist is really pretty, it is also pretty deserted most times and I would strongly recommend only going there if you go with a group of folks......Being isolated makes it really nice, but can be trouble if something goes wrong.

Lots more to choose from and most are not overly crowded with tourists.

I love Coki Beach....but there is a that road that you need to get there that is under water. We waited till we saw at least 3 cars go thru before we went thru. Very crowded beach! After "Johnson" insisted on waiting on us hand & foot, I had the urge to remind him that slavery is over!!

Meagan's Beach was our favorite on St. Thomas! IMO because we didn't 'explore' that many beaches off the beaten path.

Most all the beaches can be considered off the beaten path. The day cruise ship arrivals usually refer their passengers to Coki beach a popular spot for snorkleing or Megans bay ,quiet lay back very pretty. Sapphire beach at the east end has the most fantastic views you will find anywhere in the carib. Its a little breezy at times but it is safe and free. It is worth the trip to see Sapphire and take photos there. The locals frequent the west end beaches. The tourist attractions like coki and magen fill up in relationship to the number of cruise ships that are in for the day. A very small number of locals use the beaches during the week so you have most all the other beaches to your self.
Bring your own rum punch, some snacks and your snorkle gear and enjoy paradise.

Can you rent beach chairs in Secret Harbor. Looks like hotels line the beach, is it daytripper friendly? Are there restrooms and is food available. Would like a beach day(1st stop on cruise) just to "crash".
Info appreciated.

Does anyone know the cost to take a cab from the cruise ship area to Magen's Beach
And are there taxis there to take you back when you want to return.

If memory serves, it is $6 per person (as long as there is more than one person in the cab) to get to and from Magens to the cruise ship dock in Havensight. Many, many ready and waiting to take you back to the ship.

Howard: you can rent a beach chair from the hotel at S. Harbor for $5; there are hotel attendants on the beach that will take your money. just sit in one of the beach chairs, and an attendant will eventually come around to inquire whether or not you are a guest at the hotel and take your money if your're not. unlike coki, you won't be overrun with tourist, locals trying to sell/rent chairs, umbrellas, drinks, etc. there is plenty of room--and shade, if you want it--b/w the hotel and the water; all in all, one of the nicest beaches on STT in consideration of view, less crowded, good snorkeling, etc. the blue moon cafe/bar is right on the beach, literally a few steps up from the sand.
enjoy.

HI,

I lived in St. Thomas in 1963. I remember a beach by the name of Morningstar, but haven't seen it listed. Does it still exist and if so, is it still as beautiful as I remember. Thanks for any info you have.

Best,

Bruce

Morningstar is stil there, although the Marriott built a resort there called Morningstar. IMHO, it's not a very pretty beach. The water is relatively rough, there is no shade, snorkeling is so-so. Many other beaches to choose from that are better.

Anyone else?

Hi Marty,

Never thought I get a reply so fast. Thanks. I guess through the eyes of a 17 year old living in St. Thomas in 1963, things seemed to look a little different then. Thanks again,

Best,

Bruce

Was there a resort on it back then? That might be why it isn't as nice as it once was? Nothing to do with your age! Haha!

Hi Marty,

You know I really can't remember. I know you weren't referring to my age, but you're right, it was along time ago. What I do remember were the beautiful cruise ships that were anchored there, and how they looked on the turquoise water up against the great St. Thomas blue skies. It was a sight to behold. At that time I was a New York City boy who grew up on the concrete streets of the Bronx, and here I was in St. Thomas working for The Seven Seas Gift Shop almost seven days a week with little pay. When we had the chance my friends and I would go to the beach. I have been to most of them, but I could't find Morningstar in the beach area of this site. Infact, there was a thread from a fellow called Islander and he told me how to get there. I, myself just got off Holland America's The Volendam. Ten day cruise, seven ports. Each port I had a shore excursion, except for the one in Martinique. Unfortunately it was cancelled because not enough passengers were interested. So I spent the day in Fort de France, brushing up on my French, and enjoying the really narrow streets. Thanks again for your help.

Best,

Bruce

P.S. Do you live in St. Thomas or are you like me, I live in Fort Lauderdale, and just happened to find this site last night?

Hi, Bruce,

Morningstar is just to the East of the entrance to Charlote Amalie's harbor, as you come in by boat. Go to and you will see that Morningstar is where the umbrella is just to the right of #36 in the lower right hand side.

Yes, I have lived on STT for 7 years.

:^ )
