Hello all!

I would like to surprise my father with a couple bottles of his favorite liquor, Pelinkovac, which is not available in the USVI when I come down to STT in June. Can anyone tell me how many bottles of liquor you are allowed to bring into the USVI?

Much love to all who post.

Thanks, Heather

I don't know officially how much you can import. But I'd bring as much as you like, I think that the custom's officials would be shocked to see people bringing liquor into STT. Are you sure that it is not available here, they seem to have everything. I'ts probably the 4 bottle rule.

I would contact some of the big liquor people here and see if you can order it...www.viphonebook.com and check the Yellow Pages. You would probably be the FIRST to bring liquor INTO the VI! Haha!

Bellows, West Indies, Premier, and Hunter are the big ones you'll want to check with.

Is there ANY restriction on individuals bringing liquor into the USVI from the US? Some states have limits but that's because they want their tax money. Those laws are rarely enforced and are more voluntarily obeyed. How would anyone know if you packed a couple of bottles in your checked luggage? There's no customs station going to the USVI from US airports.

We bring 1 liter on Grey Goose Vodka (in a plastic nalgene container) and 2 bottles of fine wine to STJ.

Why would you bring Grey Goose, when you can get it at K-mart for about $9? One less thing to pack...and we have several places with great wine selections, too...check Randy's Bistro, Marina Market, Gourmet Gallery, etc.

Maybe because it goes well with meat brought from the states? 😀

Bringing your own liquor to the VI is like bringing sand to the beach!

*-)Perhaps I am just answering my own question, but according to Frommers, travellers from the US may bring one liter of wine or liquor into the USVI. http://www.frommers.com/destinations/virginislands/0092020157.html

I don't know, is this correct information?

Marty,
Are you sure about that price for Grey Goose? The last time I wanted to get Grey Goose at A.H. Riise I was told that they don't carry anything they can't discount. Grey Goose was $28 per 750ml at Plaza Extra on STX, about the same as back home.

I last bought Grey Goose a couple of weeks ago at Plaza Xtra and it was 26.49/liter. Cheers!

As an alcoholic that hasn't been drinking for the last 3 years, my prices may be 'off' a little, but, when shopping, one must know which places to get the best deals...AH Riise is about the worst place, beside Pueblo, for getting liquor deals...check K-mart, Cost-U-Less, PriceMart, Plaza, etc....or, heck cut out the middleman and go direct to the distributors...they may have rules against retail sales, but a little schmoozing can go a long way....

Believe me, it doesn't matter how much you bring IN even if there are restrictions as no one will have any clue! I have seen guests buy booze in PR and bring it, but if you can get it here, that is kinda crazy for true!!!!

Last time I went to the states, I purchased a BB pistol and contacted the airline to assure I could carry it in my luggage. The airline said nothing about letting anyone know about it, so I didn't. The airport discovered it and called me to the counter, they allowed it to be carried in my luggage, I just had to sign some paper acknowledging that I had it. They said my suit-case would be handed to me personally at our airport.......NOT!!!!!! I laughed to myself, when they told me that, it doesn't happen like that here!

hmgrindle, bring as much as you want, not to worry! I would see if it can be ordered here first tho, you more than likely would pay less!
NO PROBLEM MON!

Ok - I will chime in - since I stated I bring GG vodka in a container. Ok - maybe I am just stupid....

Or... consider that some people have why too much time on their hands, but for us travelling a far distance (from CA) to STJ - time = money.

For me, going out of my way just to buy GG - whether at KMart (wherever that may be...) or somewhere else just makes no sense (FOR ME). The time I spend going out of my way to save a few cents - or the added weight in my luggage is just not worth it.

Here's my process - I already have GG vodka at home (big bottle for Costco) - I already have a nice plastic nalgene REI container (light ~200gr) - I pour the GG in the container - place the container in my luggage with our snorkel stuff and few clothes/bathing suits I get to STT - go directly to STJ - get to our condo - and have what I need vodka wise. No big deal - and certainly not worth the effort of going to a store to rebuy liquor I already have. btw, I rarely drink hard alcohol when at home, but love vodka (and rum) while I am in Carib. (or HI).

Other things I bring...
2 bottles of fine wine (that I have a disposable cardboard container for) - why? because again, I have these at home and they fit nicely and easily in my large luggage bag (dive bag style with hefty wheels) AND I cannot find this wine in the VIs - nor do I care to look for acceptable wine that I have no idea how it was stored (very important btw for those who care).

4 frozen NY steaks (also from Costco) - the best - and have not seen quality meat anywhere in STJ that matches this meat - we have a BBQ and love cooking our steaks by the pool. I put these in a soft side cooler - and they are still frozen when we arrive. We use the soft sided cooler for beach trips.

Packs of Ketchup/Relish/Mustard/Mayonnaise/Salt/Pepper.

Ground Peets Coffee (similar to our being wine snobs...)

So my bag contains the above - along with the clothes and snorkel stuff I need - it is rugged and easy to roll - and weighs just under 50 lbs (weight limit).

We get to STJ - go to Starfish Market to pick up other food and drink essentials (like Sierra Nevada beer - yes I am a beer snob also) and of course Cruzan Rum (dark and light) along with assorted fruit juices.

Works perfect for us - and pretty much carries us through our week - except for 1-2 short stops at Starfish Market (generally for ice and water) which is on the way to Cruz Bay for us.

Great system for us - don't rain on my parade... LOL

But, Blujahz, since you have to po to the store in your home state, then bring it home, pack it, lug it down, then you go to the store here ANYWAY? Wouldn't you save yourself a lot of time and trouble if you just went to the store when you got here and left all of the buying and lugging from the States out of the equation? Just a question. Do as you please, of course. It just seems to me that you are creating more work for yourself and costing yourself more money...

I do not go to the store here just to pick-up these specific items - this is general shopping. You make it sound as it is more difficult to do here, and have to lug it all. It is not - otherwise I wouldn't.

What extra money? A few dollars extra for GG vodka here versus at the Starfish market? Actually, I think GG vodka (BIG bottle) is probably cheaper at Costco than Starfish anyway (not that it is important). I do it because I have it here and I do not have to worry about it there - and it is easy.

On this side I do very little lugging except from my front door to our airport ride (about 20 feet) - then to the outside check-in at the airport (about 10 feet). On the STT - I only lug the bag (on wheels) to the Westin office at STT (about 200 feet) - and let them lug the rest to show up in our condo. Really not a big effort. I don't know if Starfish even carries GG (nor do I care) - I am bringing the meat, the wine and Peets coffee anyway - why do I care if another liter of GG vodka (2lbs?) - that takes up very little room - is included? I am bringing one well-packed bag and one small carry-on - really - no big deal.

I have certainly been to STJ and BVI enough times to know what works for me.

The OP was about bringing alcohol into the USVI - I was merely stating that I do - for the reasons stated.

Oh yeah - we bring liquid laundry soap also.... LOL.

Thank heaven that Starfish carries Sierra Nevada ale - now that would be lugging.... LOL

Anway... best. we are looking forward to our upcoming visit - sure hope Starfish still carries SN - I prefer real ale.

Although hmgrindle has been chided a bit for bringing booze to the V.I., things are never that simple...like "oh just buy it here...or make arrangements". We have a long and ardous flights to get to paradise. We are very tired by time we get to St Croix in the early evening having traveled since maybe 6 AM. By time we get to our balcony overlooking Gallows Bay and Christianstad Harbor we have no inclination to rent a car or hire a taxi to go get rum. Nothing open in walking distance at that time of the evening. We bring a couple of travelers of rum in our checked baggage...also a diet coke...just to cover all bases. Hotel has the best ice machine in the world so no worrys there.

We bring very little rum back anymore since Absolute purchased Cruzan and the prices went up. Barely worth the hassle anymore. Sounds like there may be another ownership change on that front.. But don't worry local V.I.'rs, spouse and I still do our best to run the islands out of rum during our three weeks plus there.:D

In a nutshell, bring what you need and then spend foolishly after that.8-)
