Great picture! I'm sure your heart races every time you see it - you remember the moment when you snapped it and go right back to the area. Thanks for sharing!

I won't give my business to anyone who advertises lower prices for locals. Makes me feel like I'm being penalized for bringing tourist dollars to the VI. Thank you for the info though.

If a guy rented one of those little inflatable power boats could he make it to norman island and back or do they frown on that?

It is common practice to have a different price for locals, especially during the off-season. When you think about it, many businesses and services couldn't stay open year-round without local support. It's not a penalty for tourists, but a thank you to the local population.

I understand the theory behind it, I just disagree with it. I travel to the islands on the off season every other year, why not have an off season discount then? I'm not trying to start a way here, I just think its unfair so I chose to spend my dollars elsewhere.

Parrothead,
A lot of places do have off season pricing as well as discounts for locals. Enough about that. As for boating to Norman Island/The Caves. Assuming you are going from one of the USVI's it no going to happen on a rental Dinghy. You can do the trip on a rental power boat, Nauti-Nymph Ocean Runners ETC. Also keep in mind that you will be traveling to a foreign country and will need to clear customs at one of the BVI's that have a customs office. To rent a boat you will need to have experience running this type of boat in blue water or hire one of the captains that the companies have around. The Caves are worth trip. Also while you are there the Indian's which is a nice dive/snorkel site are there as well as the world infamous Willi T's. As for a day sail it would be a long day of sailing with very little in water time.
Hope this helps.
Jay

parrothead82,
You feel you are being penalized for bringing tourist dollars to the VI. That's how you feel,so be it. However you do get off season discounts by Hotels/Resorts/Restaurants/Car Rental Co's/Local Merchants, (all you can bargain with, some even barter with). How do you feel about the mainland discounts that are given if you are a member of a certain group such as, AARP,AA,Union,Trade Group's,holder of certain credit card,Senior citizen, member of certain fraternal organizations, etc., Do you feel your mainland dollars are being penalized because you are not a member of a group afforded this type of discount?

I was just wondering why there is even an "off" season for the islands? It seems like a perfect place to be able to anytime. I never understood that.

Am i going to be there during the off season? Nov 7 - Nov 14?

Connie,
You are going in off season Nov 7-Nov 14.The Off Season was from April 15-December 15. Now they have a new Season called Shoulder season which is April 15-to June 15. I would think that off season was due to Hurricane's ,weather better on the mainland and the experience of past travelers going to the islands.

Connie,
They use to celebrate the end of the official hurricane season on October 25th. I think NOAA had something to due with extending it to the end of November. You will be down here for the christmas winds that are in Nov and Dec.

Connie,
Christmas winds coined by sailors are when the winds come from the north and replace the trade winds. The waves are bigger, white caps and winds up to 20 sometimes 30 Knots. Cooler water temp about 5 degrees and night time cooler temps on land about 5 degrees. No snow is expected!LOL

As far as local discounts, think of it this way,
If not for locals, a lot of business would not be sent a businesses'
way. It's not unfair, when you think how many times a local will
acompany visiting friends on these occasions.
If you are insulted, all I can say is,...get real.

DreamConch,

My opinion is my opinion. I chose not to spend money at the places that I hear about that offer those discounts. What do I need to get real about? I spend somewhere in the range 5-6 thousand dollars a year in the usvi, isn't it my decision how I chose to spend it?
