My family (2 adults and 2 kids ages 7 and 10) will be staying in St. Thomas in late Feb. I have a few questions. Will we need/want a car? I don't mind being a little flexible with taxis or public transportation but I don't want to be waiting for buses that never arrive. Please name me 2 "not to be missed" attractions or activities and 2 restaurants. We like to do some outdoorsy, hiking, kayaking, horseback riding kinds of things but are sometimes limited because of the kids ages. St. John's looks promising. Any suggestions? Thanks, Cindy
-Having your own car is the best way to go. No need to wait around for a taxi and you can just take off whenever you want to. Specially with the kids.
-A good local restaurant is Cuzzin's on Back street. If the kids are typical kids and would rather have french fries and that sort of thing then Greenhouse is an option for lunch. Believe it or not but there is a Hard Rock Cafe too! There are a whole myriad of places to eat. There is also the usual Wendy's and Mickey D's.
-A day at Magens bay capped off by a milkshake from the Udder Delight dairy is ..... yummy!
-There is a kayaking tour around the nature preserve run by V.I. Ecotours.
-There is a bike tour around Water Island. And also one around the Magen's bay area.
-A trip to Coral World Aquarium would probably interest the kids followed by snorkeling and feeding the fish at Coki beach right nextdoor.
-Not to be missed..... St.John!!!!! Lots of outdoorsy things to do. Hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, beach hopping or just plain old exploring.
Hope this helped.
Thanks, also, I was checking out car rentals and it looks like a good deal to take a car over to St. Johns ($25 including people!!) but a couple of the rental places at St. Johns said cars could not leave the island. I am waiting to hear back from some but do you know if the rental car places in St. Thomas allow the cars to go to St. Johns? Thanks, Cindy
Several car rental places on St.Thomas do allow their vehicles to go to St.John (no 's'). I do not know of names off the top of my head but here is a link to the USVI yellow pages:

Your best bet would be to rent the car in St.Thomas and take the ferry over to St.John. When you get to St.John, head on over the National Park office and pick up a map.
I hope this message board is not against posting of helpful links.
Hello Cindy,
You will want to rent a car. Taxi charges by destination and by person, so that will add up. You can take taxis. I would not recommend taking public transportation, it is not very reliable.
For the kids - they might like Coral World. And Adults as well. Its a great marine park.
Hiking - St. John for sure. St. John in general is a great day trip. If you take a rental car over it will allow you to see a lot more of the island. There are lots of great beaches to choose from.
Beaches are a great option for families. Magens Bay is a great choice, it deepens slowly so it is good for children. And it very calm. Sapphire Beach is nice also.
Are you looking for great restaurants for the family or for you and your husband (romantic type settings) or both???
