I've signed up for 5-day kayaking/camping trip that leaves from Cruz Bay on St. John at 8 a.m. May 29. But now I can't find anywhere to stay the night before (May 28) that is relatively inexpensive ($150 or less). Surprisingly, many places still have 3-night minimums.

Anyone know of an inexpensive hotel in Cruz Bay or even Red Hook (St. Thomas) that will let me reserve for 1 night on Memorial Day weekend??

I can't reach them, either by phone or email.

Have you considered staying on STT and coming over on the early morning ferry? There are several options around $150/night.

Best Western, Emerald Beach (next to airport)

Thanks, Chris, yes, I am looking at that option now. I think that might be my best bet. Do you know if the 6:30 a.m. ferry from Red Hook is generally on time? And are cabs to Red Hook easy to find that early if I'm in Charlotte Amalie?

Things happen but in general the early ferry runs on time as many have to get to STJ for work. Cabs should not be a problem, but set it up at the hotel desk just the same.

Keep trying St John Inn - you will get them - as far as the ferry's go they leave on the hour, so a 7am will have you to Cruz Bay by 7:20am or so, but remember that ferry is usually very busy with workers coming over to STJ so get there with some time to spare (ie not at 6:55am 🙂 )

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I did get a call back from St. John Inn; they have a 3-night minimum also. So, I'm booked at the Holiday Inn on St. Thomas. Now that I've actually made reservations I cannot wait to go!

Too bad you didn't book in at The Crystal Palace - stay in town instead of way out at Holiday Inn.

very correct .... ronnie is a great host in a great place near town - took care of friends for a one night stay and treated them like a true "friend" ... nice truck, too

Paul: You need to come back for a visit! Holiday Inn is Windward Passage on the waterfront, but I agree with you that Crystal Palace would give mischievous a Virgin Islands experience! 😉

They will have to leave out early to catch the 6:30 or 7:30 at that hour of the morning I don't think there is a 7.

RL

Thanks you guys for the suggestion they stay with me!

That's too funny. Do you know how long it took me to erase Holiday Inn from my brain, and to call it Windward Passage instead?
Well, see, something happened during two years! I actually started calling it Windward Passage and completely forgot that that is Holiday Inn: somehow I put it out by the airport.

Ok, so it's more "in" town, but The Crystal Palace with Ronnie is still hands down the better choice - better location.

Check out the Crystal Palace. A great to stay for one night and I'm sure the bald owner will make sure you get to the ferry on time. He's your basic nice guy.

And you'll get to stay in a great historic house.

I have a couple of pictures for them but lost their card with the address on it. Can you help me by sending me an e-mail on their address please.

Too Funny - Island Paul

I remember it when it was the Windward Passage and not the Holiday Inn. When we came back to the island 20 years later we still called it the Windward Passage. Just skipped the whole Holiday Inn thing.

Sheesh, when I lived in Big America (okay it was many moons ago!) Frenchman's Reef was the Holiday Inn!!!
