My wife and I will be returning to St John in May. We've always wanted to visit Reef Bay but we're not really big hikers. I've seen some villa rental listings in the Reef Bay area that mention a road (Parts of which are dirt) that is approximately 4 miles to Cruz Bay. Can anyone give me more info on this.
Thanks
There are several villas on the Reef bay side of the island. Most are up on the mountainside or the top. I stayed at Cocolobo over there a few years ago. Since then, they have built additional houses in the area. A large section of the road to that side of the island is dirt. I was there in July of this year and I heard they were paving some of it, but by and large I believe it is still unpaved. It takes about 1/2 hour to get to Cruz Bay from the area and it is rough but manageable. You will definitely want to rent a jeep or similar.
http://www.caribbeanvilla.com/ THis site has villas divided by area of the island and will indicate the villas located in the Reef Bay area. I used this management company but there are others for St. John so check around on the internet. If you rent a villa in the area of cocolobo it is a tough last 1/4 mile drive up the mountainside. Pretty steep and you dont want to drive it during a downpour. I'm not trying to scare you off -- just being realistic. I loved the area. REef bay is beautfiul. I hiked the trails in the area and the beaches are really nice. It is off the beaten track which is a good thing unless you prefer the hubub of Cruz Bay and the north end beaches.
Hope that's helpful
if you're looking just to visit reef bay beach for a day, but do not want to stay out there...
the road is now paved more than half way out there, so it is not as difficult anymore. there is a small trail [steep but not very long at all-- a 3 minute walk] which leads from one of the dirt roads down to the beach. it is well worth it.
to get there: drive straight from town on the southshore road, past rendezvous, through fish bay, over the two bridges... as you continue straight on this main road, i think it's the last road which branches off to the left; so if you follow the road all the way out until it reaches the end, then backtrack, it should be easy to find. the trail leads down where this dirt road widens a little bit, in between the cute little shingle house and the big white modern house.
enjoy
Thanks for the info. We stay in a villa at Rendevous Bay so it looks like we're all ready in the right area!!
