Notice to Visitors, It is still legal to smoke cigarettes in the USVI. The Airports have designated areas, the restaurants have designated areas, Taxi's don't allow it etc.But you can smoke on the beach. I was at the beach yesterday, there was a young man smoking within ear shot away from me. A women approached him and demanded he put his cigarette out and lectured him on second hand smoke, she said if he was in New Jersey he would get a summons and pay a fine on the first offense and jail time on the second. He politely put his cigarette out, got his things together and left. This women was upwind of him so the smoke was not going in her direction. I don't smoke anymore, however I don't feel I should play cop and tell people how they should live their life. Not to be rude, but I hope the women goes back to New Jersey soon.

The woman was wrong. I have a house in New Jersey. No, you can't smoke in bars or restaurants anymore, and there's not any cops running around trying to fine you. That's more left up to the owner of the bar to institute the no smoking ban. Everybody just goes outside to smoke. There's no ashtrays anymore either.

You can certainly smoke on the beach, in the streets, on the water...anyplace else.

I give him alot of credit for picking up like that and leaving. I think she should of left before.

Connie,
Go to www.njgasp.org

Each of the 21 counties have banned smoking in county parks,130 municipalities have a ban in their parks. You can't smoke on the beach in Belmar/Manasquan. And the police do issue a summons, you also can't smoke in your car with anyone under the age of 18 riding with you. You can't smoke in any public building Public or private (Private like VFW halls,American Legion etc). I think if you just give your law makers a little more time, you will not be able to smoke in the streets or on the water. Alot of these laws have recently passed. There's pages on the Internet about NJ no smoking.

I guess we're just not aware of those laws because we're in South Jersey. If that makes a difference, but I'm down the shore every weekend and I see people smoking everywhere. Even at the local elks club, you're not "suppose" to smoke there, but they do...and alot.

Wow....

Smoking in public buildings and many private offices in the VI has been verboten for a long time now and given that the BVI and PR have recently passed more stringent and all-encompassing anti-smoking measures, I've no doubt that some brilliant spark in our legislative body will soon raise the issue here and that a law will be passed.

My personal opinion as a smoker amounts to zilch but my restaurant/bar has a non-smoking dining area with a/c, the main bar area with all the fans has never even remotely come close to a blue-smoke-filled "den" and I would very much resent it if "the law" decreed that my smoking patrons be summarily banned from indulging their habit.

I don't have a problem with people smoking on the beach or on the water but my cry has always been, "KEEP YOUR BUTTS OFF THE BEACH!!" You can douse your butts in the sand but then put them either in a bag or a can and properly dispose of them when you leave. There is nothing worse than walking along an otherwise pristine beach early in the morning to find a solid line of cigarette filters delineating the high tide mark. Many boat operators don't allow smoking on board because sparks can put holes in sails.

What's funny is that a thread such as this will never be of as much interest as the Kenny Chesney thread...guess we should just be lucky that Paris Hilton and Brittney Spears don't have homes here. Cheers!

To smokers to take their butts WITH them when they leave the beach. The number of cigarette butts on STJ beaches has been rising considerably over the past few years. Cigarette butts ARE litter, and they should NOT be left on the beach.

(It's littering to throw them out your car window too).

My guess is that the people who post on this board care enough to take care of the beaches and not litter, so I doubt this reminder will do any good.

Most smokers don't realize how obnoxious smoking is to non-smokers. As a non-smoker, cigarette and cigar smoke smell like burning garbage. I especially find it offensive in restaurants and enclosed areas. I got in the habit a few years ago of carrying a can of Lysol spray disinfectant in my car. When I was in a restaurant with someone smoking I would simply spray Lysol into the air all around my table. We would have the battle of the obnoxious odors. And at least Lysol hasn't been proved to cause cancer.

It is hypocritical for the government to have a war on drugs when the number one killer drug in the country is tobacco and it is legal, what kind of a message does that send to kids.

The moral excellence and firmness of your action. Very impressive!

Very familiar with "non-smoking" beaches as Manasquan and Belmar are not the only ones to adopt specific beaches or areas in to non-smokers. The indoor smoking ban in NJ applies to all establishments in NJ except for the casinos and even those with outdoor dining areas ask the patron to please not smoke. Now if they would only limit the time delivery trucks and buses idle and dump their dirty exhaust into the air (which is far more harmful than smoking) ... but that's another issue. Some California citys and towns have also declared their beaches non-smoking. In the BVI you can be ticketed for smoking within 50 yds of a restaurant or public place and on the beaches. The ban is really spreading world wide as there is no smoking in public places in Germany, particularly public buildings, England is considering smoke-free legislation and siimilar measures have already taken effect in Spain. Puerto Rico has passed a law to eliminate smoking in all public places as well as in private cars with children aboard; while the authorities in Bermuda have voted by a large margin to ban smoking in every indoor public space.

Some NJ beach towns ban coolers and food (and all ban alcohol) so guess the cigs are just one less thing to worry about bringing to the beach!

I do think that this thread might develop into the pages about KC if those opposed/for to the smoking ban were as vocal as those in NJ when the public debates were being held but I think everyone can agree that's there's nothing nastier than trying to enjoy a great meal with someone puffing at the next table (and I smoke so don't take me to task for being anit-smoking - but I always have a little paper cup with some water in it to douse the cig at the beach and take the garbage home with me!).

Hey lizard lips, I wonder if Rotorhead drinks. Somewhere I read that kills more folks. And talk about obnoxious as in smoke smell. Ever been around an obnoxious drunk........like me.

I don't smoke but love smokers since in fact they help the Social Security Administration and really don't know that they do.

My mother, whom I loved dearly, was a chain smoker.
When in jr. high, now known as middle school, I was often called into the office
after she drove me to school (while she, of course, had a cigarette lit in the car).
They would sniff me, go through my purse, all but make me undress, so as, to prove
I did not have cigarettes on my person. I, of course, would complain to my
mother, but she, would poo-pa my complaints.
She died of lung cancer. Me, I have lung problems that can only be attributed to
her habit. I do not smoke.
And to those that do. Go to somewhere else people aren't.

Promoguy,
I don't believe that smokers would disagree with anyone that it is not a healthy life style. The Govt loves smokers, because of the sin tax they collect. In just two day's, Yesterday the women on the beach demanding this young man put his cigarette out, and today rotorhead saying how in a Restaurant spraying Lysol around his table is away to combat obnoxious smoke. He qualifies that Lysol doe's not give you cancer. He prepares for this type of confrontation. I think that spraying Lysol around food would be very dangerous to your health in more ways than one. It's the attitude that concerns me.
As I was typing Dreamconch made another civil statement!

Dream Conch:
Boy, can I relate. I went through the exact same thing. I also lost my mom to lung cancer, just three months ago. I have sinus problems and growing up suffered many, many ear infections, which experts now say can be related to being in a smoke filled enviornment (both of my parents smoked).

Smokers, stop complaining that your rights are being taken away. Those of us who have to breathe your putrid air are having our right to breathe clean air and live a healthy life taken from us.

I caught my Mom sneaking smokes in a bathroom stall in an ice skating rink that I was training at. This was after she told me she quit 10 years prior. Funny I never smelled it on her. She didn't die of lung cancer, but my Dad did! How many of you know someone that died of lung cancer, but never smoked? Speculation would be that it was from 2nd hand smoke, but maybe not...who knows.
Bottom line...we're all going to die of something...so let's get on with living and enjoying life~!

Lizardbreath,
So the picture of health for you is that you are an incredible hunk walking the beach with clean lungs and a great stride. Are you married? Good for you for stopping both smoking and drinking.
