It is swimming weather ALL the time in STT! Including January. Now....I know that "swimming weather" can be a personal judgement. What might be enjoyable water temp. for a person from say....Canada....might be bordering on torture for me. I'm constantly amazed at the folks swimming in the Gulf of MX in January. Goosebumps appearing on my skin as I write. But, January in STT, you will find refreshing, clear, warm water. Perfect for even a frigophobiac like me.

I'm not getting in the water in January!! Except maybe in my pool! Haha! The water temps get down in the 70's!! BRRRRRRrrrrr!!!!!!!!

(Hard to believe that I would swim in my lake back in Michigan as soon as the ice was gone! Was I nutz?!?!?!?!?!?)

Marty

Too bad it is so cold....

Maybe like 79 degrees. But I don't think it gets that cold.....usually more like 80's...u know that..

Most people don't understand the the tropical waters in the Virgin Islands only change a few degrees season to season. Unlike some other tropical locations farther north..

The average air temperaure EVERY DAY during January is in the mid 80's... The TV weather guy has a tough job saying the same thing every day....saying the same thing every day...

Kathy...Everyday .. (except major hurricane days around October) is great swimming weather in the USVI...

I live in Michigan and i was on St. John and St. Thoams this past February and March and i thought the water was a bit cold. However if you are like in Aruba the water was not cold at all in January i guess be cause it's much further South.

70 degrees? Wow! I'm glad I didn't know that at the time. Must have been the rum keeping me warm. Sure felt warmer than 70!

Marty: Where in Mi. are you from? Yes we go swimming in the lakes around here ( Mi). but not until 4th of july. LOL Always go swimming when we are in STT in Feb. It's as warm as our lakes here in July. Fresh water pools are the killer but your sun is so warm and nice in Feb. I still have your order for Arby's and Krispy Kremes.

I am from Lake Orion, about an hour North of Detroit, just North of Pontiac. I lived ON Lake Orion, and now that I have lived here, there is no WAY I would want to go in that water again! Yuck! Haha!

Don't forget the Horsey Sauce!! 🙂

We can't all be as lucky as you and live in VI. I am in Saginaw and am familiar with Lake Orion. We have to travel to Higgins Lake to swim. But I can eat ARBYS every week. LOL You have the better of the deal. I have to be content with 3 weeks in STT and love every minute of it. We have been coming there for several years and I still learn of new places there from this board. Thanks to all of you for keeping us mainlanders informed.

I refuse to go in the water from about the first of Dec thru the end of Feb. The water is just too damn cold. Here on STX, the water temp goes down to about 75.

So... can I go snorkeling in the end of October? And, what are my chances for nasty weather? I know until November is hurricane season and thats unpredictable. But, i did read on here about watching the weather off Africa - is there a website? Don't watch much TV. Lots of rainstorms, intermittent rain, dry-as-soon-as-it's-over rain, spurts of rain? Maybe like Midwest thunderstorms - here (sometimes all of a sudden) then gone? Does it rain more at certain times of day, afternoons with the buildup of humidity? Is October a good time to go? I can just hear all of you - "my God, anytime is a good time to go!" LOL Thanks.

Yes, you are correct, anytime is a good time to come. There is always the possibility that a hurricane might come here, but the odds are pretty slim. If you check the Weather Channel's website about 3 days before you leave, you will be able to find out if a storm is headed our way. Other than that, at the end of October, plan for water temps of about 83 (great snorkeling), highs of about 87-89, lows of about 78-80, chance of rain about 30% (everyday), Easterly breeze at 5-10 knots. When it rains, it's normally a 10-20 minute shower, then back to blue skies and sunshine with rainbows.

Personally I'd rather be swimming in 70 degree water in St. John in February then shoveling 7 feet of snow in sub zero winter in Vermont.... I'll take that 70degree water!

Hi,
I live in SUNNY (HA) southern California - and visit St. Thomas each year. I have NEVER been in the California ocean and have no intention of ever doing so. I don't even go to the beaches here as they are dirty. My family and I LOVE St. Thomas. We always stay at Sapphire Beach - and the ocean temp is WONDERFUL! The Ocean is clear - snorkeling is awesome. Would love to be able to go to St. Thomas and other carribbean islands much more often!
