Driving on the Island

August 05, 2016 05:47PM

How are the driving skills on St Thomas? I understand that you use a standard car with the wheel on the left but drive on the left side of the road as well. Do you find there are lots of accidents with foreigners? Do you have freeways on the island? What are the speed limits like?

Aside from fender-benders, major car accidents are rare. The highest posted speed limit is 35MPH and most of your driving is in the 20-30 range. There are no freeways, most main roads are one lane each way with the exception of the waterfront road (two lanes each way but where there are numerous traffic lights and the driving is very slow). Very occasionally you'll come across a visitor who comes off a side road or driveway onto a main road and goes into the wrong lane but most visitors get the hang of driving here within the first half hour and quickly relax and enjoy exploring. Cars will often stop in the middle of the road to chat with someone or pick up/drop off a passenger and you quickly learn to be a defensive driver with eyes on the road at all times. This is not the place to imagine putting the vehicle into cruise control and textng away!
