The request for Foxy's rom punch recipe reminded me to ask for some help. I've been trying to make Mijotes after sipping a few at Indigo. I followed this recipe suggesting Captain Morgans Original Spiced Rum and it was just the worst drink ever. Anyone ever mixed drinks with this brand and the drinks tasted yummy? If you did please give up a recipe I could use. Many Many Thanks.

Having a Mom that was raised in Cuba, this was a popular drink in our family. Here is the recipe. Spiced rum would ruin it.

Mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail which became popular in the United States during the late 1980s, and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity.

A mojito is traditionally made of five ingredients: spearmint, rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime, and carbonated water. Its combination of sweetness and refreshing citrus and spearmint flavors are intended to mask the potent kick of the rum, and have made this clear cocktail a popular summer drink. Many hotels in Havana also add angostura bitters to cut the sweetness of the mojito; while a popular variation, it is not the original version created in La Bodeguita del Medio.

To make a Mojito, juice from a lime is added to sugar and mint leaves in a tall glass. The mixture is then gently mashed repeatedly with a muddler. Crushed ice is then added, followed by rum and topped off with club soda.

The word mojito is derived from the diminutive of the word mojo.

From what my mom taught me, the trick is really breaking down the mint in the glass. If you leave it not crushed enough, it tends to float to the top and gets caught in your teeth. This makes for a unromantic evening! happy I tend to smash the crap out of it. LOL!

Aside from the mashing the mint which makes the drink more refreshing than just having it float, I like to also make my own sugar syrup. Very easy to make.

The simple syrup is also what we use to make a great sangria. Wine, syrup, triple sec, club soda, & fruit.

If you have a Cheesburger in Paridise restaurant near you, they make a very good mojito with Cruzan ( pineapple I believe).

Have to disagree. Have drank with the president of Cruzan rum on STX. Have had mojitos with mango or pineapple rum..wonderful. Their website has the mango recipe. Try it you will like it happy

We like this variation

1. Muddle 7 mint leaves with one tablespoon of sugar. We use Black Mint, it grows wild here in Michigan
2. Add one shot of canned limeade concentrate
3. Add two shots light rum
4. Stir to dissolve the sugar
5. Strain into a glass full of ice cubes to remove the smashed mint that always gets stuck in your teeth.
6. Top with chilled club soda
7. Squeeze a wedge of lime on top and garnish with a sprig of mint to give it a nice fresh aroma and taste.

We find this easier than juicing up a bunch of limes, especially if you want to make a pitcher full of Mojito base so you can serve a larger group.

well you can always take the lazy way out like I do, and buy Mojito mix and add the light rum. still pretty good.

if you have sugar syrup, you can make a good mint julep. almost the same as a mojito, but use Kentucky Bourbon and no lime juice. I don't really care for it - the smell of bourbon takes me back to my college days and makes me want to puke.

If you love mojitos, like i do and want to take the really easy way out, go to Bahama Breeze. They make an excellent mojito. They take real sugar cane and run it through the ringer for the drink. It's excellent.

Had a Mojito at Indigo's on Friday night and I couldn't drink it! I was very surprised as it was very tart and dry, never had a bad one from there before. I figured it needed more sugar, but there was none at the table. My fault, I should have said something. Thanx for the recipe, I am not a lemonade fan, but LOVE mojito's! (and now I know it is Lime).

Surprised Blu hasn't chimed in on this one! I think she is away in FL for a get away!

You are so right...had one in Orlando..awesome.
There is a great place in Philly and Atlantic City. Help me Blu...I believe it is Cubra Libra. I kmow that is not spelled right..but great mojitos. Went there in Philly before Chesney show a few years back...couldn't resist slipping that in. Feeling daring tonight.

very much the same way I make them
always best if you can get some sugar cane

I have cheated with the simple syurp and made in advance to enhance mint flavor
1 cup water bring to a boil
1 cup sugar stir in slowly dissolving
cool keep stirring
add 5 to 6 mint sprigs
cool on stove till at room temperature

Now you got a mint flavored simple syrup
Just a different rums are for different things
and Cuban rums are hard to come by
I like Don Q - PR rum
Ron Barillito (sp) if I have a few extra coin

I found Cruzan Blanca just a little too mild

By the simpe syrup recipe works for mint jullieps also and you know what this weekend is
