How To: Car Ferry between St. Thomas and St. John

This guide will walk you through the steps required to take the car barge between St. Thomas and St. John.

St. John Car Barge

Step 1.

Choose a Departure Time

The car ferries travel between Red Hook, St. Thomas and Enighed Pond, St. John. There are two companies that operate car ferries.

Step 2.

Drive to Red Hook

The car ferry and passenger ferry terminal are right next to each other; but each has its own entrance. There are signs. Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure time. There is a port tax of $3 per Car, small SUV, Motorcycle; $4 per truck, van, large SUV. The port tax is paid to an attendant in a booth just at the entry area for loading on the car ferry.

Step 3.

Waiting and Loading Area

There are multiple lines in the waiting area. An attendant in the loading area will typically instruct you on which line to join. Wait in your car until the attendant begins the loading process and directs you onto the ferry.

Step 4.

Boarding the Car Ferry

The barge attendants will direct driver’s one by one onto the car barge and indicate where to park on the barge. You will usually reverse your vehicle onto the car ferry.

Step 5.

Buy Tickets

Once on the car ferry, you can either stay in your car, or you can get out and sit on the upper deck. One person should stay with the car until the attendant comes to sell you a ticket. You can purchase one way or round trip. Cash only. A receipt will be provided; and the return ticket if you purchased a round trip fare. When purchasing a round trip ticket the return times will be listed, or you can ask the attendant to double check.

Step 6.

Enjoy the Ride

If you are sitting on the upper deck, start heading back to your car once you get close to the dock area in St. John. The arrival place is Enighed Pond, just outside Cruz Bay. The proper name of the arrival dock is Theovald Eric Moorehead Dock and Terminal. That name is seldom used, most people call it Enighed Pond Dock or the Car Ferry Dock.
