Our 25th wedding anv. is coming and would like to take my wife to the islands. Have no idea where to go but would like for her to see the ocean from our room. She has never seen the ocean..
Don't have a lot of funds but would like to find something around $100.00 a night, if that is even in the ball park.
I am open to all ideas and advice, kind of like a fish out of water when it come to travel out of the states. Checked on air fares and that is as far as I got. I can get there but after that I am losts. Hope all you travelers of the world can help.
THANKS Denny & Audrey

You didn't say what time of year or which island. $100 a night is possible but we need details in order to help.

That's the summer season and you should have lots of options. Two nice places on STX are Tamarind Reef and Hibiscus Beach Resort. They are both right on the water, small and simple. Not sure quite as low as $100 a night, but probably close.

Good luck.

Denny.....first of all CONGRATS. I have visited St Thomas, Croix and John and in my opinion, St John is the most beautiful island. Unfortunately, it's size, popularity and beauty make it the most expensive. If you are traveling on a budget (most of us are) I would recommend you checking out Cinnamon Bay Campground. This is not your average campground. It's located on one of the longest and most incredible beaches on St John. My wife and I stayed there one night last year because our villa was not ready when we arrived. We actually came back later in the week to enjoy the beach. Cinnamon Bay offers bare sites for tents as well as cottages. We stayed in a cottage. They are approximately 12x12 rooms with 3 or 4 beds, a table and a porch with grill and picnic table. They also have BEACH FRONT COTTAGES (i think 4 of them) which are around 90-100 a night during May/June. Bathroom and shower facilities are shared but clean and ample. Good Luck.

I got a room at the Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort on St. Croix for $85 a night on www.skyauction.com
We haven't been there yet (trip is planned for April) so I can't tell you what it's like from personal experience but it looks nice on their website and it is in your price range.

How exactly does skyauction work? If you win a bid, do you then get a voucher that you use to book your room? How easy is this to do? Thank in advance for any info on this auction site from anyone who has used it!

I won an auction for a room at the Carambola beach resort. After I paid Sky Auction I gave them the dates I wanted (first week in May) telling them that I already had my air line tickets ($377 ea. complete out of JFK) they booked the room and gave me a confirmation number. I haven't contacted Carambola directly yet but I probably will, just for my own peace of mind. A friend says he got a room in Vagas for $10/night through Sky Auction and every thing went well for him.

Skyauction is easy - you just need to read all the details of a particular auction for taxes, surcharges for peak travel dates, and any blackout dates if there are any. These are always listed on the auction. After you win, you must pay by credit card within I think it is 72 hours. You then give them the dates that you want. They ask you for second choice dates, but you don't have to give a second choice. If they no longer have availability for the dates you want, as happened to us once, they will tell you what dates are available and if they can give you any alternative hotel in the same area for the dates you want. If they do not have what you want available and you don't like any of the alternatives, you do have the option of getting your money back. We have used skyauction for charter air, hotel only, and air/hotel packages with no problem.

Denny
You can find a lot of hotel/resort options on St Thomas and St Croix for under $100 per night. Particularly in the mid season (May/june) Do more "on line" research and ask some more questions. Put it all together with your airfare and ground transport and you will have a wonderful time. It is not necessary to try "unknown" stuff like Sky auction (which may be very good..but) just talk to people.. call and ask questions and get answers.

Have fun...

Denny-

I know a lady who lives on STT and rents a 1 bedroom condo at Sapphire Village for $125/nt - any season. I can PM you her info.

Island Beachcomber hotel is on the beach (just next to the airport) and is supposed to be around $130/nt in high season, so low season should be less. I have never checked, but my souces have told me it is a decent enough spot - nothing fancy - but clean and on the beach.

Both Sapphire Beach Resort and Secret Harbout take the Entertainment card for 50% off room rates in the off-season. Look up Sapphire's rates and take half off to see where you come out - maybe $130 nt?

Check this out for STJ condos and see the prices mentioned at the bottom of each listing:

Also, check out the Hotel on the Cay in St.Croix. You can see the ocean from every room and it has it's own beach. Just another option
