I know vehicle rentals have been talked about to death but I need a 4 x 4 to hold 8 adult passengers. Amy ideas? I say this while remembering we booked a 7 passenger vehicle last year from Budget/Airport and when we showed up they had no such vehicle so I need something guaranteed reliable. Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm not sure there even is such a thing. With eight people you're much better off renting two vehicles. You don't need a 4X4 on St Thomas and if you're staying on St John you'll have much better maneuverability with two vehicles than one big one.

I would agree that if you have two drivers you should look into two vehicles. I don't know the dynamics of your party but with that many people you usually have different ideas of where to go and what to do. It also gives flexibility when running to the grocery or parking in town.

We all will hang together so one car is best if possible. Discount Car Rental is offering the following -- can anyone vouch for their reliability? (Last year we rented from Budget and when we arrived, they did not have our vehicle available.) :

Dodge Durango, 4 door, automatic, seats 8 passengers, hard top, 4x4, a/c, with all discounts and taxes included $1,001.79. This vehicle is allowed to go to St. John.

Chevy Traverse, 4 door, automatic, seats 8 passengers, hard top, 4x4, a/c with all discounts and taxes included $1,073.21. These vehicles are allowed to go to St. John.

Discount has a healthy reputation. Hope your luggage will fit as well as the eight bodies!

Yeah, we already considered that and figured it may be worth struggling to and from the airport so we only have to drive one vehicle and have only one designated driver 😀

I've driven both. Like the Chevy much, much better. But the Dodge may have a bit more room. Either way, reserve the thrid row tiny tushies and short legs. We call it the "ralph row". Maybe consider a mini-van? Not as cool, but less of a barf-factor.

And...

MiniVan Cons: Not cool, No 4-wheeling in the snow, no off roading in sand pits, Won't impress teenage boys

MiniVan Pros: Less of a barf-factor, more interior room, Easier access to the 3rd row, Smoother ride, better gas mileage, Will impress middle-aged house wives and cost sensitive dads.

blu4u, you're really not making much sense.

In both the Traverse and the Durango, you are talking about putting three individuals in the third row seat. Three normal sized adults WILL NOT fit comfortably packed into a third row seat. Three small children....good to go. Three adults, no way.

Really, STT Resident? What exactly do you not understand? Have you, STT Resident, ever been crammed into the third row of a hot SUV, with two other full-sized adults, on STT's twisty pot-holed roads? The "ralph row" is a first cousin to the "barf barge". Does that make more sense?

Ruby, Prehaps you can find a mini-van for rent--not as trendy but, much more comfy. 4x4 is overkill. Unless you are renting a villa on an unimproved remote dirt mountain road, 2wd is fine for the VI. $1k per week is allot of $$ .You should at least be comfortable. Enjoy your trip!!

My apologies for the confusion which apparently irritated you, but I couldn't make head nor tail of the analogies referencing snow and sand pits, teenage boys, middle aged housewives and cost sensitive dads. Thank you for clarifying.

We have 7 adults but possibly an 8th -- won't know til the last minute. We had a minivan last year and it was fine for 6. And we had no trouble on STT but when we went over to St. John, we skidded a bit on those hills. Since we do plan to travel to St. John at least twice, we need something that will be able to make the roads and hold 8. We used to have an expedition and that held 8 of us pretty well. I don't really know what to do now but one vehicle would be much better for us ... and it has to handle St. John.
