Why no one has written about this place, I'll never know!
If you are in STJ - just as you come off the ferry - look to the left of the band stand - and there it is - the home of the BEST DAMN meal we had on STJ - Shela's Hot Pot.

For $15/plate my wife and I had fresh shrimp cooked in peppers & onions over Shela's rice. On the side was a delicious plantain and the best DAMN sweet potato I've ever had - and I don't like sweet potato. This stuff tasted like candy.

Oh yeah - she had some homemade fruit punch that cried out for some dark rum, but by itself was pure nectar.

We're taking a boat ride tomorrow and supposed to be back in Cruz Bay around 4. My fingers are crossed that Miss Shela will still be there. She promised to save me us a plate.

I'm thrilled that you're loving that gorgeous island! Honestly, I don't think that Shela's was open when I've been in that area. We arrive in 29 days, and hopefully I'll get a chance to enjoy it!
(I'm not a big sweet potato fan, either, but I can't wait to try them!)

Have fun!

By the way-
Have you tried Uncle Joe's BBQ yet? It's just around the corner, across from the street from Cool Breeze Jeep rental.
Dyno-mite!

I really want Uncle Joe's, but I don't think I've been looking in the right place for it!

Lulu-
Are you there NOW? It's right next to the STJ info booth by the parking lot at Cruz Bay. (Across from Cap's?) It's easy to miss because it's more of a small take-out place, and its hours might be questionable. Please find it! It's sooo scrumptious...
We have to wait 29 days 'til we have it again:-(

Jim,

Do you really think I'd take time out of my day on St. John to surf the Internet. Not that I don't love you all, but I never even thought for a half-second that my laptop was going with me.

I don't go until November. A little over 40 days, I think. I looked for it last time, but never noticed it. I will try again. I'm thinking if they're open when I get there, that might be a good first night meal. I'm not really interested in cooking...

Well, gosh, Lulu. I probably wouldn't, either.
Some people do, though.-
Just trying to help. Whatever.

Sorry. I just feel bad for all the people who take their laptops. It's my one week a year where I don't know anything that's going on stateside, and I don't mind one bit. I think I'm just grumpy about it because one of my traveling companions actually thought I might bring my laptop so she could check her email. Not when I'd have to pay to check my bag.

I promise to report back the second my plane brings me home, but there won't be any real-time trip reports for this gal. Sorry if I was short with you. I was trying to be funny and it didn't work, apparently. 🙂

On the plus side, if your directions get me to Uncle Joe's, I don't have to cook on my travel day!

That reminds me of a place I heard of to try that is across the street from the lumber yard? Cannot remember the name of it right now but, we stopped by one morning and the cook was there preparing for the week. They' were only open a couple days a week and that was in April during high season. It's just a tiny little place. Anyone know the place?

I love sweet potatoes..............

Lulu, don't feel sorry! If I spent my whole vacation checking stocks, reading news, checking in with work, then yeah, there's a problem. But the fact is, there is so much downtime for us that it just makes sense to upload my photos and check in with my fellow travelers.

C'mon, if I hadn't brought my laptop you might not have gotten word about the torrential rains moving out and the sunshine coming in! Well, okay, you would have, but still....

Don't feel bad for me Lulu. I feel like I'm sharing my vacation with all the wonderful people on VINOW who helped make this a very special vacation for my darling wife and me. We might be here without y'all, but we wouldn't have been as knowledgeable as we were because of y'all.

Are you thinking of Hercule's, where you can get some really good Pates?
About the laptop on vacation... I have to agree. The only way I get a real vacation is if I leave it at home. As much as I love the bugger...sometimes you need to take a break from everything.

Lulu-
I, too, was being dry and also lose myself deep within "island Time" while there! Last April, I became so catatonic that I thought it was Wednesday all day, just to find out that it was indeed Thursday night. I almost felt robbed of a day, as our last day (sat.-sat.) was looming closer still!
I become completely gellified (sp?), and love it. Now all I have to do is somehow keep track of my days, I guess...
28 days to go!

I'm pretty sure it will be open. I don't really remember them every closing down for a long period of time. There is another spot you can check out that has some good local eats, Love City something or other (I cannot believe I can't remember the whole name, not enough coffee yet I guess) it is across from the entrance for the car barge. It is a white "van" set up with a tent and chairs. Very reasonable and tasty. They usually have a dry erase board out front with what they have that day. I like to stop in there for a johnny cake with cheese before I hit the beach.
