Hi Everyone,

I need some help. We have a party arriving on St. John's next week, the first is a single gal. Is it ok for her to go to town by herself at nite? Is there a taxi service on Island I can recommend to her to get about. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It really all depends on the girl. Is it safe - sure if she taxis into a known establishment, behaves herself, then taxis back home again. Anything can happen in between and that's where potential trouble lies.

St. John is a wonderful place and we (married couple - mid 40's) always have a great time. It's not a "dancing/partying" place - though trouble can be found.

Yes - there are taxi services throughout the island.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Vilover,

Thanks for your input. I lived there so long ago (84') that I don't have a feel for the island now. Frommers message board were so negative and mention crime over and over again. It was from that site I found Vinow and this forum. It has been really helpful to read, but most importantly thank you for taking the time to let me know what you've experienced. Once everyone is together I sure we'll have a great time.

We visit the islands each year for a week. Have never had any issues there (other than one drunk at a Super Bowl party at Caribbean Saloon - but even that was avoided by simply walking away).

Crime is there (as it is in every town) if you are in the wrong place. It's generally not random on STJ. Bad people generally hang out with other bad people in bad places.

There are awesome gathering places in and around Cruz Bay where she will feel very safe. We LOVE Morgan's Mango for a cocktail and conversation (it's pretty quiet there). More rowdy people go to Woody's and it gets very crowded - next door is the Quiet Mon with an upstairs bar area where you can "people/traffic watch" - again pretty friendly folks there to strike a conversation. The Beach Bar has a solid reputation for fun and safety and has some live entertainment at times. There's plenty to do for her that will give her enjoyment and safety.

Taxis circle the area constantly. Just waive one down. Otherwise they are listed in the phone book. Also - any of the spots I mentioned would be HAPPY to call her a taxi to be sure she's comfortable. STJ bar/restaurant people really are great and want all the visitors to have a great time.

Let us know how it goes! We LOVE Trip Reports here!

Good Luck! Have Fun!
