Hi All,

I was lucky to get a direct flight from New York to STT on November 14. My frequent flier miles were about to expire and my husband and I decided to use them to upgrade to first class which later I found out was really business class. Regardless, we decided it was worth it. Mostly because I hate to fly and I don't want to torture my husband with two take offs and landings in one day.

When I got my itinerary back from the airlines, they changed my outbound flight from the direct flight to a connecting one to San Juan than to STT. When I called the airlines to change it back they said that flight was cancelled. They couldn' t explain why, they were a little confused themselves about it. The woman said it was probably cancelled because they did not have enough passengers.

My confusion:
Number 1- November is 9 months away. Why would they cancel a flight due to not enough passengers in March? The AA representative was also perplexed.

Number 2- There is only one outgoing flight every day at 8 in the morning and it cost pretty much the same as a connecting flight. Why wouldn't people book that flight?
Again the AA rep didn't understand it either.

I asked if the plane was out for Maintenance that week? She said that she didn't think so.

Anyway, I decided to call back after the weekend and the rep said that the airlines cancelled the direct flights for Mon, Tues, and Wed for that week only and they were back to the regular schedule the following week. Still don't know why. -Just seems a little weird to me.

Sometimes I think the airlines make things up as they go along. A friend and I had a flight cancelled to New York due to bad weather. (Delta). So we called American and were on the plane toot suite!

I always book my trips for November and start off with a non-stop then ultimately it turns into the dreaded connection. I THINK they do this because they have in their system all the high season flight schedules and as they dwindle into their low season SEP/OCT and NOV they start pulling the flights.

This happens to me all the time and it's the only thing I can think of.

Kimberlysea,

Do you fly from JFK? I made a reservation for the next day (Thursday) direct flight. I reeeeaaaaallllly hope they don't change to a connecting one. I originally thought of going to St John because it was and easy, short direct flight. As I mentioned, I hate to fly! Then I saw this forum and wow was I excited to see so many people that loved it! Never experienced that before when choosing vacation destinations. Usually, there are good and bad reviews, these seem to be all good.

Bosie, I guess each airline measures the risks differently. Wish the passengers had some say in it. Kind of feel that your rights are thrown out the window once the cabin door shut.

This happens all the time when you book way ahead of time. We also book with miles business class. What you should do is constantly check back. We initially were flying Los Angeles/PR/STT. Finally got a LAX/MIA/STT. Flying back via JFK. Since it's all miles all the time you have to put with this.

By the way, wife does think. Me I can't stand it, but she is good at it. I think it has to do with the right/left brain thing.
