So I have a lens for my upcoming trip but I'm not really sure when to use it? obviously outdoors and in bright sun but if I just leave the filter on will it affect indoor photos in a negative way?

Yes, remove it for indoor photos.

use it between approx 9-10am and 3-4pm. Earler than 9 or later than 4 it would be of little use and you wouldnt accurately capture the "warmer" light at those times.

Practice rotating the filter until you get the effect you are looking for through your viewfinder. I agree with the timeframe that Jay mentioned.
