We will be staying at Maho Bay Ecotents for 4 nights and 5 days in early February. A few questions:

Do they sell mixed drinks at the beach or should we plan on picking up amenities in town?

I like the sun, but can burn quickly. Can your rent umbrellas there or are there enough shady patches on the beach?

Any favorite tent areas I should recommend?

What about going into town on Saturday night? What is the best way to get back late at night?

Have you had a massage there? Any good?

Trying to think if I have more questions....Thank you btw!

Because otherwise you're gonna have to either walk, hitch hike or take a taxi to get back and forth from Maho.

There are so many place to vist that the taxis don't go to. Also more freedom to come and go as you like. so many beaches so little time to wait for taxis

The restaurant (which is not on the beach, but up a goodly number of stairs) has beer and wine only at very reasonable prices. Good food also!

i guess we weren't planning on leaving maho so much. its just really a "relax and beach it" trip for us (and our first vacation without kidlets since we became parents). i love to explore and check out new things, but it also seems that lots of the rental companies have 3 day minimums in high season. 1 day maybe we could rent, 3 days i just don't think we could justify.

i have read that the snorkeling at maho and little maho are excellent. not the best on the island, but good. thoughts on that?

also, i know that maho runs a shuttle of sorts to and from on saturday nights. so that might eliminate some taxi costs.

does anyone know what a taxi costs to and from maho to cruz bay?

the only thing i would perhaps like to specifically arrange travel for is waterlemon cay and a hike.

Haven't stayed there, but swimming by the beach (Little Maho?) on my way from Francis to Maho, I can't imagine there are umbrellas or drink service. Take a collapsible cooler in your luggage and buy a few beers/pop to take along and keep semi-chilled as you work through them. Come to think of it, I don't know if there are umbrellas anywhere on StJ, maybe at Trunk but...?!?! If that's what you're looking for, stay on STT.

I'll give this message a shot, I used to work at Maho and still live here on the island.

"A" Section is closest to the beach, "D" section is closer to the kitchen and up a little higher on the hill, "E" is a long way from the beach. If you can get VIP A it doesn't cost any more but has a private shower and is a slightly bigger unit. "F" section was always either a love it or hate it section. It is high on the hillside and is the quietest. It also has the most amazing views and its own pavilion area that is great for sunsets with drinks.

Late night taxis back to Maho are expensive, like maybe 12 a person min of 20 bucks IF you can get a taxi to take you to Maho. More than likely they will take you to the Goat Trail at Big Maho beach. The regular Fretts taxi is $8 one way either way on a regular scheduled trip. He leaves from town to Maho on the odd twenty (1:20, 3:30, 5:20, 7:20 and the last one is 9:20pm).

I know the massage lady but have not had one so I could not say.

No umbrelllas at Maho but there is plenty of shade on that beach if you want it. Plenty of sun as well.

Snorkeling at Waterlemon is nice and you can walk there from Maho, about 45 minutes.

They run special taxis to fun things like late night at Island Blues in Coral Bay where you sign up at the activities desk.

You can call Maho and ask to speak to Activities, they can answer a lot of your questions directly with the most accurate facts. You will get either Deb or Leslie.

Hi Josh,

...."D" section is closer to the kitchen...

Do you mean the restaurant? I thought each tent had its own stove and utensils?

Also, do you know anything about the night snorkel tour at Maho?

Thanks!

Yes, by Kitchen I mean the restaurant area. Each unit has a propane coleman stove and some basic utensils. I think the night snorkel is on Wednesday nights but you should check with the Activities desk. It is run by the Dive shop and you would go out on their scuba boat to a location nearby. I have never been but we used to go night diving from the shore for fun and it was always great. They provide wet suits for you on the night snorkel so you don't get too cold.

okay so about those kitchens. they have at least one decent knife right? we are going to make at least a few meals there and i suspect i might have to cut some veggies or something. i don't want to have to pack a pocket knife and then CHECK bags.

Asrai - long time no talk! 🙂

Once at Maho, you will be pretty isolated.

When we were there in December, lots of folks did not have a rental car. If they wanted to see more of the island, they took Mr. Hamilton's tours (day tours and night tours to all the "must do" places) for around $20 PP give or take.

Mr. Frett is THE taxi service for Maho. he just goes back and forth all day Cruz Bay--Maho--Cruz Bay--Maho. I think it was $10 PP. Getting a taxi to other parts of the island couldm be hit or miss.

Maho has a well stocked convenience store onsite. Be prepared for sticker stock!

There is good snorkeling around the point between Little and big maho. And you can easily walk to Big Maho or Francis Bay. It's a fairly long walk to Waterlemon (snorkel heaven), but we did it.

We will be back in June, staying at Harmon Studios again - cannot convince the wife to stay in the tent.

The best advice I can give you is, start training now - walk every day and do stair training (like stairmaster). I can not emphasis enough about the stairs!!!
