Yeah right- it never makes sense. Just get yourself on Favorites with all the options, Sidestep, Orbitz, TravelZoo and all the rest, and keep checking them several times a day until you get what you need. Also sign up to be on an email alert from all the major airlines too so that they send you alerts when they offer "specials". I mean, how full are the planes gonna be during hurricane season, they're bound to smarten up and offer some low rates sooner or later.

Hi,
Check out american airlines or hotwire NOW. Roundtrip to Stt $331 mid July. Maybe it would be the same in August.

I've been searching daily for flights on American for many months and haven't seen the fare in August drop one bit. I'm stuck with AA because I've got vouchers from last year to use and because John is already booked on the direct flights with FF miles. He would appreciate it if the kids and I travel with him. The nonstop flights have been locked at $647 forever. We're flying Saturday to Saturday, which I know isn't great, in mid August. For when were you seeing those fares?

Has anyone had any luck with August car rental either? I can't believe the rental fees this year.

Last year at this time I was all set. I had plane tix and car rental ($326 for two weeks compact car) all in place. It's certainly a challenge this year.

Average airfare rates went up again last week (7th time since January) as all the airlines are hemoraging and need to find money somewhere. I am afraid the 'sweet deal' days may be a thing of the past. Save those pennies.

There is an added pain in the butt with American. Last year I booked a higher fare, around $600, early in the year, knowing fares would come down. I checked each day and, sure enough, down they came, to about $388. I called the airline and got a vouchers for the difference with each decrease in fare, which I am using for this year's trip.

The big, HOWEVER, and why I don't do the same this year, is that American has imposed a $100 fee to get a lower fare for an already purchased ticket.

Grrrrrrrr.......

I had a heck of a time getting decent airfare for 6/25 - 7/2 from JFK to STT. We are from Tucson, AZ and it costs over $1000 RT to fly to STT. We are actually flying in from Phoenix to JFK on JetBlue ($266 RT) and spending a few days with my parents prior to STT and several weeks with my parents upon our return from STT in order to get a direct flight at a reasonable rate ($540 for me and I actually got a child's rate of $450 apiece for my 2 kids through Interval International on American). Thank god I booked these tickets back in Feb and believe it or not the coach seats on that direct flight has been sold out for several months now, the only seats available are business class for $915! Usually I am on the receiving end of the bad airfare deal..... What in the world is going on that week in STT? Another wedding perhaps? We bought a floating week at Bluebeard's Beach Club last year and thought the summer months would be easier to find better airfare, etc. (I also have the summers off being that I work in a school). Well, when all is said and done we are actually getting 2 vacations for about $746 apiece RT in airfare.

My parents had a similar issue with airfare for May and stuck it out and got about $350 RT for a direct flight about a month before they left. No issues regarding the flight being sold out though. To make a long story short (Ha Ha) try to be patient and maybe they will drop. It looks like they've gone down a bit to $603. Maybe this is the beginning. Good luck to you!

One one more thing to think of if you haven't bought the tix yet... My husband and I are AAA club members and UNBELIEVABLY, -I mean i didn't even know they sold airfare thru them!- I found NON-STOP tix for $316 each!! -from D.C. area where we live to STT Aug. 13-20. That's unheard of. I wish I knew last year when I made our honeymoon plans for Aug.8 and didn't get a ticket for under $590. We stayed on St.John at Gallows Point and now are taking my parents back this year as we get 20% off for repeat guests -AND at 316 for airfare I can't believe we can AFFORD to take them!! And the rates kept going up and down constantly, and depending on the week too, so keep looking at it - AAA.com :O) -Good luck, Lisa

Check the fares early and often, as well as surrounding airports. I just booked Philly to St. Thomas in August nonstop for $328 last week. We then take a car and ferry to St. John Prior to that, the airfare had consistently been $875 nonstop (since at least November). I saw the rate on Travelocity and tried to grab it. It went up almost $100 dollars ($423) during the time I tried to book. Logged out of Travelocity and then into Expedia which was still showing the $328. Good Luck
