Hi all , I'm new to the board here, my brother just purchased a place in St Croix and I wish to visit him in nov or dec. my problem is finding affordable airfare from the columbus/cincinnati oh market. the lowest fares I've seen are still above 500 bucks (and I'm buying 4 tix) so can someone offer some help -- I would be willing to drive to another area to catch a flight because I'm dead set on getting there, Is flying to St John and ferrying over an option ?? Thanks ManitouDan

You cannot travel directly from STJ to STX. You can travel from St Thomas to STX by plane or at that time of year by Fast Ferry (thanks STXER). However, I doubt you will find any significant savings flying into STT and hopping versus direct to STX. You might try Cleveland or other 'larger' airport, but I doubt that will have major savings over what you are seeing. I am afraid you are looking at the going rate, especially during the high season for the USVI.

Dan,

if you have more time than money, several people I know have used priceline.com and/or hotwire.com to get tickets to various destinations at lower that published rates. The trade off is that you won't know what airlines you will be flying or your itinerary is until after you buy the tickets, and could find yourself making several long layovers, traveling at off hours or to geographically illogical connection airports (the airlines do it to fill up empty planes). Bottom line is that these services will cost you less but still get you here, but you'll end up paying in other ways, namely adding many more hours to your travel time.

Traveling both ways on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, or Saturday can also lower fares.

There is one other possibility: try downloading a fare search program called Sidestep. It works with your Internet Explorer web browser to search virtually all of the flight booking sites. Sidestep usually beats what I've found through Orbitz, Yahoo, etc. by putting together travel itineraries using more than one airline and requiring two layovers.

Good luck -- hope you and your travel companions can make it down here. If you come before December 15, the start of the high season, you'll get great weather and lots fewer people.

Dan

We had good luck with onetravel.com when we went to STT in February this year, although we had to leave from Pit. ( We are from Canton, BTW). Cleveland will most likely have the best fares for you at that time of year. ( Believe me, I research fares a LOT!) Always planning for the next time. Good Luck.....You'll love it there.

Might try http://ata.com/home.html

ATA will be offering direct flights from IND to STT starting 18 Dec (Saturdays only). Not sure if the "fast ferry" operates during the low season, but to get to St Croix from St Thomas you can look at http://www.seaborneairlines.com/ for a connection.

Of course you can check the other airlines for your time frame...

http://usairways.com/ (US Airways) CMH - PHL or CLT - St Croix

http://aa.com/ (American Airlines, American Eagle)

http://www.delta.com/home/index.jsp (Delta Airlines)

http://www.united.com/ (United Airlines)

http://jetblue.com/ (closest to you would be BUF or the hub city NY/JKF and they only go to San Juan, PR...have to catch probably American Eagle or Seaborne out of there.)
