I have been to Lindquist and Sapphire and also what they call Smith bay now and I thought they had extremely clear water. I have been to Magens as well and love the beach but the water was not quite the same but a storm just blew through. I have never been to Coki and heard that was very clear. These were all just day trips so I understand the water can change hour by hour and day by day. Are there any beaches on st croix that can compare with just how clear the water is and the under water visability? Any answers can include Buck Island as that place sounds great!

I'm most familiar with Cane Bay and the beaches at the Buccaneer. In both cases, assuming no rough weather, I can stand chest deep in water - probably about 4 1/2' and see my feet clearly. Snorkeling, you can easily see 10-15' below you.

Thank you Linda and I did not mean Lindquist in the first sentence, I meant I think Lindburgh or whatever the emerald beach is, sorry! So I have been to four different ones on st thomas 🙂

This rainy weather will create runoff into our waters so find a nice pool for a couple days as snorkeling won't be great and it's safer to stay out of the runoff water until the beaches can flush themselves out to get clean..
Smith Bay beach is very nice (it was formerly Lindquist) as is Secret Harbor, Coki is too busy for me on Cruise ship days but Coral World aways fun to visit. Hull Bay is also a very nice beach. Magen's is usually very clear except when there is rain. Try is again if you'll be here long enough. The is an aboritum there to check out as well. Ask at the gate.

Alana is right. Water clarity depends on many factors--storm activity, runoff, ocean surge, wind and waves. Frederiksted is on the leeward side of the island is generally protected from the wind. This makes for very calm water conditions that are generally very clear most of the time. However, I've seen 100+ ft of visibilty from the North Shore to the East End to the south shore. It really just depends on the weather and the right combination of conditions.

Yes! I took my first trip to STX in March- I normally vacation on STT..I didn't have high hopes for the beaches... and then my friends took me to RAINBOW BEACH. It is amazing. You will love it. I would compare it to Smith Bay beach on STT, but with a beach bar and chair rentals.
You will love it.

I had to bump this up because I had one more question. I did want to thank everyone for the responses first. I had a trip to STT nailed down and now we are all leaning towards STX. I wanted to question Sugar Beach and the condos and club St Croix there. No need for a review of the lodging facilities for any of those but I was more wondering about the beach itself. Mainly close up by the sand. From pictures it does not look that clear until out a ways so really just wondering if you can snorkle some and have a little bit of clear water at Sugar Beach. It does not have to be fantastic in anyway, but at least something good and clear 🙂 Just looking for any input on the beach only from anyone that has been there.

Check out cottages -by-the-sea, Caribbeancottages.com or Sandcastles on the beach. They are both located on the west end on one of the best beaches on island. The water is usually crystal clear, with great snorkeling, sandy entrance into water, very peaceful etc...I live on STX and this is the beach I go to when I get a chance!
