As I posted earlier, we will be in port on April 8th for St. Thomas and our vow renewals. Are the shops and local markets open on Easter Sunday? Also, how painful is the drink "painkillers" ? This will be our 9am toast to each other (the original time was at 11:30 am) on Meagans Bay. Any good walking distance places to grab something to eat? Another question, our last Island is Tortola on April 9th. We only have 5 hours on this island and the excursions to the Baths are 4-4.5 hours. I feel that's cutting it close. Any suggestions on how to get there from port? Is it very difficult to get to? Thank you for all your help. 4 days and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm can't give you answers to the other questions, but I can tell you that a Painkiller is basically a Pina Colada on the rocks. How much pain it kills (and eventually causes) is in direct proportion to the amount of rum added. Enjoy!

*Shops in downtown are always closed by 1 p.m. on any given Sunday...being Easter, you may find more oc them closed for a Holiday...but, odds are, most will be open.

*A Painkiller, which is so named due to the ampoount of rum in it, is made with equal parts OJ, pineapple juice, cream of coconut (Coco Lopez) and rum, sprinkled with nutmeg. Tastes fantastic!

*There's only one place to grab something to eat at Magens and that's right by the bar...nothing fancy. You COULD walk up to Magens Point Resort to eat at INDiGO (great food there), but I'd rather take a cab than walk.

*And it sounds like you will be on a cruise? If so, any of the trips that go to the Baths offered by the cruise ship will make it in time, so I'd recommend booking one with your ship....

Thanks for all the tips. One other question, is it easy to get a cab from Megans bay to the restaurant you suggested?

Marty,
downtown shops CLOSE by 1:00 on Sundays?? I could see them not opening until then (like here in the states) but closing a 1:00 is weird. We'll have to remember that, as the other couple wants to do shopping while we're there, tho we haven't decided which day for that.

Hi New Yorker,
Since I am a wedding coordinator, I am guessing your time on the beach for the renewal, which by the way CONGRATULATIONS, would be only about an hour. If you go to Indigo, it is very easy to get a taxi. The taxi's are just inside the gate at Magen's to the right as you face the water! If you are going thru Weddings the Island Way, let me know, I would ask the co. if I could partake in your day, I LOVE vow renewals the most for obvious reasons! Not sure what time Indigo's open, you might have to have a couple of drinks before getting food. They have great Mojitoes there! You could then take a taxi to town and still catch a little shopping before heading to whatever you plan to do next! I'm guessing that Havensight shopping may stay open a little longer due to the ships being docked there (depending on what cruise line you are on)! Enjoy your wonderful day!
Oh, and what part of NY are you from? I am from outside of Elmira, near Corning and Ithaca. Are you from the city?

Hello Sherri,

We are going through Weddings the Island Way. I have spoken with Erica and Tina on occasion. That would be great if you can be there. We're scheduled for a 9am renewal. I'm hearing from other people that the shops close at 1pm due to the holiday. Oh well. We'll make the best of it. We are from a town called Mastic on Long Island. If you've hear of the "hamptons" we're about 45 minutes to southampton and about 1.5 hour to Montauk, the eastern most tip of Long Island. Our ship is the Dawn and is in port by 8am. I'm looking so forward to this trip!!!! Hope to see you there!!!

New Yorker,
Just got my wedding sched. and I am not on it, oh I wish I had known sooner! I will call Erica and see if it is possible that I be your coordinator! 🙂 That would be awesome! If not, at least I know you will be in good hands!
You should have enough time to see a little bit of town. Oh, and by the way, WTIW can drop you off at Indigo right after the ceremony unless you plan to stay at the beach for a while first!

I am sorry but the stores downtown do NOT all close at 1 pm. Some of the stores on the waterfront stay open till around 3:00. Mountaineer Girl, the best shopping day downtown is Saturday, but as I recall you are here for Carnival Saturday. All stores will be closed that day for the Adult's Parade.

Actually I have noticed a trend that some stores stay open during the parades.

so, don't plan on shopping on Sat or Sun?? and then I got to pick a day when there are some ships in port, but not too many... I say forget the shopping thing, but the Mrs. with the other couple going with us has saved a couple grand just to spend on diamond earrings! its burning a hole in her pocket.

4/19 - 4/26, so basically the 20th thru the 25th. I have already figured out we should go to Jost on the 21 (Sat) and STJ on the 23rd (Mon - because no cruise ship in port) and therefore shop on the 24 when there are only 2 ships in port. Sound like a plan? I think the 25th (wed) was when the food fair is , if I'm not mistaken. That leaves, the 20th, 22nd, 24th and 25th for shopping and limin. 🙂

My husband is appalled that I have ANY plans, he wants to fly by the seat of his pants - not me.

Okay, well shopping and Food Fair is a great combo! You can get some food, buy some diamonds! Both are in the same area, town will be brimming with fun!

OK cool! so our last full day there we'll have to shop for food and diamonds. Except that will make the day go fast...and I'll want time to stand still at that point! I'll be crying that night, saying Please lets not go home!

Hi there!

My name is Jennifer Mance and I am a singer with the Jean Ann Ryan Company, here on the Norwegian DAWN! Yes, I am on the same ship as you right now! I have been "google-ing" to try to find out if any stores will be open in Barbados and St. Thomas and found your blog. I hope you are enjoying your cruise so far, and I hope we find SOMETHING open! ( lol)
I hope you are coming to our shows......Band On The Run is my favorite. If you saw our show " South Beach Rave" I am the blonde singer who introduced the cast at the end.
Take care, and hope to meet you sometime this cruise.
