What are the best beaches for snorkeling besides Waterlemon?

Almost all the beaches on STJ are great for snorkeling. The book Feet, Fins and four wheel drive is what you need.

I agree with Linda---just about every beach on STJ is worth a snorkel. Somehow Waterlemon now has the rep as the best. It's good, but there are lots of good beaches, each different in its way. When we first started going to STJ, Waterlemon was just one of many and wasn't crowded. Now with it's popularity it can be crowded. Numbers were kept down somewhat because it required a short, easy walk and a lot of people were looking for a beach they could drive to. But now daysails sometimes come and dump a boatload of snorkelers there.

Similarly, Trunk was long ago established as the best beach. Some folks coming via cruise ship seem unaware that there are other beaches on STJ.

I'd suggest picking up a copy of the book that Linda mentions or "St John: Off the Beaten Track" and going off to explore the island.

St. John Off the Beaten Path just made it's way to our mailbox and it's another good read. Lots of beaches that we've never heard of.

Like someone else said, I don't think you can go wrong with any beach. 🙂

Flanaghan island and Newfound Bay. both pristine spots. but you have to get there by water. try a boat charter out of Coral Bay,,,,,,,,Flyaway Charters for power, or Breath for sail. also check out Hidden Reef Kayaking for access to pristine spots on the East End.

Our favorite was Hawknest. We saw several turtles, rays, and octopus. This is also a nice beach to just sit and relax.
Jumbie and Trunk Bay were also good. Trunk Bay is best after 4:30pm when everyone is leaving and the wedding party's are showing up.

Trunk bay is also very relaxing early in the morning...but beware, if ships are in port on STT, clear off the beach by 9:30a.m.! We love our early morning snorkels there, and then onto something more quiet
