We are looking to rent a villa on St Thomas in summer of 2006. We don't want to be on the beach but prefer a view from the higher elevations. What are the better areas to look as far as safety is concerned? Megan's Bay or are other aras safer? We have 4 children and a fun safe vacation is what we are looking for. Thanks.

Peterborg is ideal. Either overlooks Magens or the North view of Hans Lolick.

I second the Peterborg suggestion.

It's a very exclusive area - many of the homes are luxury rental villas or estates of wealthy residents - a good amount of which are behind discreet security gates. It's far enough from everything that there's probably not much, if any, spillover of crime - in other words, if you are in Estate Peterborg, you should have a reason for being there. You won't find people just wandering around this place.

It is out on a peninsula. The views, as RL stated, are wonderful. The closest beach is Megans (VERY close).

The only drawback is that you aren't so close to the East End nightlife/restaurant scene. You can't just stumble back to this place after a night of drinking.

If safety is a conern and you want amazing views, this is the spot for villa rentals. They're a little more expensive here, though. So, be prepared to pay - but you surely get what you pay for. This is also where the Clintons spent their vacation time - see Villa Sand Dollar with it's own beach.

There are many villas for rent in Estate Peterborg.

We leave Friday for a villa on Peterborg. We booked through Calypso Realty located in St. Thomas. Pleasant people to deal with, and only a few select propertys for rentals.
They have a website with some photos. Calypsorealty.com
Enjoy!

I second Peterborg. We went last Sept. and are going again this August. We are renting the same villa again. It was a great experience! You can check www.mclaughlinanderson.com for a lot of villas. You do have to rent a car because taxis won't take you there or pick you up, but I can't imagine not having a car for any reason. The driving is really not as bad as so many people say.

WE just stayed at a villa called Harbor Vista in STT, it overlooks the harbor at Charlotte Amalie. It is a 6 bedroom villa and has it's own pool. The best amenity is the caretaker who is availablel to direct you on day trips to STJ and make reservations for you for everything from restaurants to para sailing. It is a private gated villa owned by a local lawyer, and we all felt very safe there. You do need to rent a car and it is about 20 minutes to almost anywhere on the island. It doesn't overlook a beach but it was interesting to sit on the veranda and watch the harbor activity in mornings over a cup of coffee. I would highly recommend this villa and the best availability is in June, July, and August.
