Hi Kirk,
It depends on the boat tour. For private boats where it is just your group on the boat a good 2 weeks is advised especially in the winter months. For the multi-passenger boats a few days is all that is needed. The week of the New Years holiday may require several months advanced booking to score a boat trip. The good news is there are many choices out there and if your first choice is full don't be shy to ask them to recommend a boat to you.

Make sure to contact the local U.S. Coast Guard office to ensure you are on a legal charter vessel @ 340-776-3497.

Usually you can find a trip you wish to take once on island but be sure to make reservations as soon as possible when you decide.
