My family and I will be going to St.Thomas at the end of this month and staying at the Frenchmens Reef. Is there any bus or shuttle service or do we need to rely on taxis? We do not want to rent a car.

Tristan:

You should really reconsider renting a car.

Taxis are very expensive....they charge by the person, not the ride. Thus if you and your family consist of 4 people and the one-way trip is $10.00 each.....you will be paying $80.00 round trip plus tip....and this will happen each time you go anywhere. This can get to be very expensive!

You will certainly want to try other restaurants during your stay.....using taxis will probably add another $100. to your expense each time.

Buses are available, but I don't think they service your resort. I don't know of any shuttle service other than taxis.

We rent from Hertz and use our AAA discount. For a week rental it runs about $250. (including taxes). Others have used hotwire.com and gotten better rates.

Good Luck!

Tristan.
You must remember to keep to the left, intersections are a little tricky at first. When you come out of Frenchman's reef you will travel up a small hill. At the top of that hill is a 3 way intersection. In the center of this intersection every day there is always broken headlights, taillights and sometimes an assortment of bumpers. Think of it as an adventure. You do need a car on the island. I like "AVIS" they try harder.

It's not too hard to drive here. One thing I have loved about driving in STT is that most drivers are VERY courteous. There is always someone willing to let you into traffic. Most people drive at a reasonable speed. The only thing I find I have to "think" about is turns. It still feels like I am doing something wrong when I turn into the left lane. The bonus of having a car is that you will get to see so much more of the island. Since a taxi ride is expensive and can take forever.

As for rentals we have rented from Dependable once and were very happy. We have rented from Hertz and always been happy with them also.
