Due to the fact that there's so much rain down there I did not want to have my vacation ruined by Mother Nature. Since I have a small child that's the last thing I want to tell my child that he cannot go to the beach. We called the hotel and spoke with a very nice lady at the concierge desk and she told us that it's not raining but pouring down. So we worked it out and we will be on the islands in the 2nd week of December and hopefully less rain to deal with. You guys can call me coward if you want to but I want sunny days when I am on the islands since that's what’s left in my memory and I would like to keep it that way.

If you have the flexibility to rearrange your trip I think your smart. It's easy for those who live on STJ to "poo poo" those of us who want nice weather. Most of us scrimp and save all year for a week or two on the island, and we worry and pray for good weather. I think it is only human nature. I would hate to go to Vail for Christmas and have no snow. Same thing.

It did cost us a bit more but i figured why not you only live once and i have to do what's best for my family. We have always gone on the islands in December and always had a great weather and am sure October is fine too but NOT this October especially this week. Am I bummed? A little bit yes but i am looking forward to December.

You guys are great.

At least you get to go anyway and maybe the water will be more clear too if there isn't constant rain coming down. Good luck and have a good time!

Wednesday AM. Bright wonderfully blue sunny skies, local weatherman says less than 20% chance of rain through the weekend with partly cloudy skies. Guess we're back to normal!

I'll be arriving on Sunday for a week and my fingers and toes are all crossed...I really don't mind "some" rain but am hoping for some beautiful sunshine, too!! We've been rained upon all week here in Virginia and it's still lookin' ugly..just can't wait to get there and experience St. John once again!!! Glad things worked out for you in being able to change your plans, though...mine were kind of "set in stone", so wish us luck!

It seems that it is raining indeed very hard at the moment on St. Thomas.

MEA CULPA! My PM to you, John, still stands as is but despite this morning's beautiful start we now have leaden skies again and some more rain just starting although it's very minimal. The winds are up some and hopefully it'll just blow out quickly. Yikes! My outside cats haven't yet run for cover but seem to be vaguely mulling it over.between sleeping and eating.

Tomorrow will of course be delightful because I have to work again - same scenario as last week...

Almost not where I am on the East End. Gloomy skies, a few drops, nothing more so far. It could be absolutely POURING downtown as we speak and it could also be sunny on other parts of the island. Who knows?

It's all very different from the weather patterns you get on the mainland which, when over land, hit a wide swathe. We're just little bitty dots in the grand scale of things, including weather.

Hurricane Hugo in the eighties totally trashed St. Croix but did much less damage to St. Thomas and almost nothing to St. John. Hurricane Marilyn totally trashed STT in 1995 but did comparatively little damage to either STX or STJ. If you look on the map and see how relatively close all the islands are, it's probably hard to make sense of, but that's the way it is.

Dear John,

Now I'm a little confused when you say that your prayers are with us.

If we were going through a hurricane then your prayers would be more than welcome but we're just having a bit of gloom which will indubitably clear (again, as last week) by tomorrow and leave us all smiling and in better spirits again.

The rain is now coming down again hard and that sucks because it means that all my recent weed-whacking will have to be shortly re-done in light of new growth.

This almost 60 year old finds that although the weed-whacking puts her almost in a Zen state once she gets going, she has a problem with all the people who drive by and honk or try to stop and chat when she's covered in bits and pieces of grass and debris from the top of either her 2002 VI Rolex Regatta cap or the VI Olympic Bobsled hat to the toes of her grungy K-mart gardening sneakers ...

There is levity in all!

And, hey, to all those visiting folks who've been with us either for the three days of rain last week or the three days of rain this week, I hope you manage(d) to fare well and make the best of just a few bad days. Even the most lousy weather (and this is NOT normal but it would be a lot worse if a hurricane came through) can still be good,

It's not cold, you can still get out there and swim. You can snuggle up with champagne and bonbons, you can either relax in your hotel room or villa, go out to a local place or go and shop. There are lots of things to do even when it rains and - trust me - you planned your trip during hurricane season and you've been lucky as have we all who live here.

Dear John,

You offended me not one bit at all. And the winds were just normal gusts and now the weather is all clearing up again. The outside cats didn't move too much and they're pretty good barometers!

Cheers, dear!
