Our first time to actually stay on the island rather than cruise stops!!Interested in renting a jeep or maybe a car. Can you rent at airport to just drive to hotel. We are staying at frenchman reef.

Can we rent online before we get there or do we have to do on island. Would a jeep be better due to the roads? will a jeep fit luggage from the airport.
Thanks for the advice

Also am a foodie but traveling with 2 teenagers and hubby so we look for good food, casual and reasonable as we like to eat out nightly.

Suggestions of places you would definetly go back to.

Nes:

Yes, the major rental car firms are at the airport.

Highly suggest that you reserve ahead of time.

IMHO the East End (Red Hook Area) is the place for great eateries...especially for teens. Molly Malones, Duffy's Love Shack, Fungies, Whale of a Tale, Sop Choppies, etc.

At the Reef is Coco Joe's, right on the beach. Nearby, in Havensight, the younger folks will enjoy Shipwreck, Pizza Amore. In town, the Greenhouse for a party atmosphere and Cuzzin's for local food.

Yes, you can rent at the airport. If you are planning on just driving on St. Thomas than I can recommend Hertz. I made reservations online and that is how to get the best rate. If you are thinking of taking the car barge over to St. John than you need to rent from someone else because Hertz does not allow the cars to be taken off the island. You will definately want to rent a car as taxi rates for 4 people will add up fast from the Marriot.

One casual place that we enjoyed eating at was called Latitude 18. It is near Red Hook on a side road off the road going to the Ritz Carlton resort. It is a rough road but our Toyota Echo made it a few times. It is a waterfront bar with outdoor tables and music on some nights. Not a lot of items on the menu but the food is good and it is easier on the pocket book. Dotties Front Porch at Compass Point Marina was also recommended but we never got there. Dotties is actually closer to you than Red Hook. You don't need reservations for either place.

Have a nice trip.
