Does anyone know if you have to make a reservation for the car ferry from Red Hook to St John? I bought a book and it mentioned you need a reservations and I don't remember anyone on the forum mentioning this. Thanks.

Honestly, I don't believe they take reservations. We tried to get there for the 2nd morning ferry...letting most of the construction and gas trucks hit the first one! That doesn't mean they won't be on the 2nd, 3rd or so on. Get there 10-15 mins ahead if possible. I have to admit that being in a Jeep wedged between two cement trucks was a bit intimadating! But no worries, jump out and go up top and enjoy the view!

Along with remembering to drive on the left hand side of the read....remember to back onto the ferry. So, back 'em up and head 'em off!

MaryAnn,
Forgot to mention that you don't want to wait for the last ferry that leaves STJ. Lines can be long and if you don't get on...you're stuck for the night on STJ. ...Cannot think of a better place to be stuck~! If you print down the ferry schedule from this forum, it will help. We used the General, but there are others. Remember which one you came over on, especially if they charged you round trip, which they usually do.

I bet you'll be back and stay on STJ next time! 🙂

You may want to buy a one way even though it would cost a little more. That way you can get on whatever ferry is there not waiting for the right company. That being said, we did a round trip but we were flexible so it was fine. We went on both companies & one is bigger & handles trucks. This was a much smoother & faster ride. Of course the one with the rooftop bar is our favorite!

Coco is right about being flexible. The other "dah" we encountered is you don't pay until a person walks around the ferry, once you're already on the way, and asks for your money. You just back up...get on, and wait for the attendant, pay, then get out and walk around.
