We are visting in June with another couple? Although it sounds fun to rent a jeep i was wondering if it would be better to rent a car for locking up snorkeling gear, etc.

Any thoughts on either side would be appreciated

we rented a jeep last month because it was our first trip to stay on the island and thought it would be cool. O.K. been there done that. Although it was cool we couldn't lock it up and it was way expensive. Will rent something smaller and less expensive next time.

If you are going to be on St. John and you plan to be off road or even on a steep dirt or rocky driveway then a Jeep would be a better choice. If you are going to be on St. Thomas a Jeep is not necessary and they are quite a bit more expensive as well as the problem of locking up your belongings. Rent a comfortable small or midsized car w/AC and a trunk for valuables.

We rented a Jeep SUV in January....actually we rented a mid-size car and were given the SUV at no extra cost......it was great for the hills on STT and getting to Lindqvist Beach .........and was lockable.......since we rented from Hertz we couldn't take the vehicle to STJ. But a Jeep SUV is an option for you.

We like the 4 door Jeeps. They have a hard top and are secure with a ton of ground clearance. Dependable and Discount on STT have them.

I'd agree with Poohwear...if you are going to spend much time on STJ , get a jeep....if you are going to stay on STT a car will likely work out best.

Living on this island, most of us who must go where the roads are not maintained drive trucks and jeeps. Cars are nice is you're only going to do the mainstream tourist thing and remain on the main roads. There are some roads that are main roads that are not well maintained (like the road going to Coki beach), that are rough but only for a short amount of time. A hardtop jeep or a grand cherokee would be best for you and another couple.

Regardless of what type of vehicle you get, ALWAYS get the insurance. It's cheap compared to what could happen to your wonderful vacation if you have an accident. We love visitors to our island and care deeply about making sure you and your group enjoy yourselves enouh to visit us time and time again...

Argh,

T.

Thanks, we are staying on St John, so it sounds like a car may be the way to go or maybe a small suv with 4wheel

I emailed Discount and Dependable on STT for a 4 wheel drive quote for 8 days. The smaller jeep is only about $50 more from them than the Taurus is from Budget. I was AMAZED. We're staying on STJ next Feb and I'm pretty sure we'll rent 4 wheel drive from Discount or Dependable instead of a car from Budget. We had a 4 wheel drive Jeep last year and absolutely LOVED IT. It's SO much fun to be out "in the open" and going to remote locations have you both access and comfort to get there. If you can afford it - GET IT.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Hi djasper,

If I were you and staying on STJ the whole time I would definately get a 4WD. Depending on how much of the island you're going to checkout. We've rented cars w/out 4WD but spent most of the time on STT and pretty much only drove along the No Shore Rd on STJ on day trips.

Have fun!

We'll be on STT/STJ in 27 more days!!8-)

Poohwear,
we'll be staying at Mahogany Run and I can't wait for the views from our condo!!
Oh and thank-you for the tip on the ship-ahead...the "guys" at Mahogany gave me the name and phone #
of a new business at the Tutu Mall. They mentioned that they weren't going to be able to hold packages anymore.

Enjoy,
Kathy
