We like Discount and they let you take the car over to STJ. You have to have a 4 wheel drive though. We originally had a small car rented, but upgraded to a jeep 4 x 4 on their recommendation.

We've rented from them twice and haven't had any problem at all. Cars are clean and in good shape.

Hertz is the only company that does NOT allow cars to STJ. Avis has a charge of $1000 (I think) if they have to go to STJ to retrieve a vehicle. My favorite is Amalie car Rental, they are AT the airport waiting for you, you get your car BEFORE your luggage even comes out!
Dependable is also good, but close at 5 sharp, if your plane is late, CALL them to see if you can make arrangements for the vehicle at the airport IF possible, but this is questionable.
All others are fine.
I work with them all!

Discount didn't mention the requirement of a jeep to travel on STJ, is this mandatory?
Amalie car rental appears to limit rentals to jeep/suv type vehicles even though they refer to them as "cars", they are almost double that of Discount. We received a quote for 2 weeks of $530.00 total for a 4 door sedan, Ford Focus type or similar.

Discount will recommend a Jeep. They have economy cars/sedans, but I wouldn't drive anything but an SUV with 4WD on St. John. And for some accommodations and/or beaches on STJ, 4WD is mandatory.

I jokingly said something to Austin at Discount about a Toyota Corolla, and he said "I can rent you one of those, too."

I replied: Do you want to drive a Toyota Corolla up the switchback between Trunk and Cinnamon Bays in the rain?

He said I should stick with the Jeep. 😎

We just got back from a month on island. Discount gave us a great rate and were nice to work with.
