We have always used Dependable Car Rental on St. Thomas. They are a small operation and have always gone out of their way to be helpful. They have new owners as of last July and they seem equally as friendly.

OK, Discount's number is (340) 776-4858...so you were CLOSE!! Haha! Remember to stay left!! When I first got here, I had no idea...so when the cab driver was driving on the left I said (yelled), "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! What are you doing?!?"

He said, "Wha, mon?"

I said, "Dude! You're driving on the wrong side of the road, man!"

"No, I'm on the right side"

"No, you're not! Your driving on the left!!"

He said, "Right."

It sounded like an Abbott and Costello routine! Haha! So I said, "OK, hold on a second here! WHY are you driving on the left side?"

He said, "We all do, mon. Tis safa dat way!" Haha!

WE USED BUDGET RENT A CAR ST THOMAS
I FOUND THAT DOING IT THROUGH BUDGET BY PHONE IN THE STATES OR ON THE WEB SITE I SAVED A LOT OF MONEY
WWW.BUDGET.COM.....ALSO THE WEEKLY RATE IS CHEAPER ALMOST THAN DAILY...we also found out that thursday to monday is 29 dollars and the other days are 39 at least they were in sept!

however we found if you CALL st thomas budget directly the prices are higher...also if you don't reserve AHEAD from home the price at the desk at the airport is higher....we extended a day when we were there and had to pay 59 instead of 29 so be careful....

my trip with my girlfrien(husband is staying home) is in three weeks....i am a little hesitant to get a rental car and drive on our own i never drove on the left......last thing i need is an accident...
but those cab fares for both of us will surely add up especially since the other lady has really not seen much of the island before...
she says she wants to vegitate at secret harbour and not go anywhere but she HAS to go to st john for a short trip we will be so close to the ferry! and TOWN for shopping and RED HOOK for groceries.......well at least i know I WILL...

PAUL what do you think should i take a chance.....except when i go to noche though...i have to cab it there so i can have their great champagne and tequila!

Hello Tam,

I don't really use the ac and actually perfer having the windows open. Its nice to have the option of turning on the ac to cool you down but isn't necessary. I have had friends visit and requests I turn on the AC because they thought the heat was unbearable. Matter of personal comfort.

The restaurant Ginger is refering to is Noche. Its in Frenchtown, which is just outside of Charlotte Amalie's main town area. Other good restaurants there are Hook, Line & Sinker, Craig & Sallys, Tuscany Grill... 🙂

Thank You Islander!

I really don't prefer or need AC unless it's unbearable, I can't imagine the VI weather being worse than Illinois heat/humidity in high summer, but you tell me. What can I expect weather there to be in mid-January? Thnx again!

Hello Tam,

In January you can expect low 80's during the day, high 70's at night. January is one of our cooler months.

Ginger...

Go ahead and get the car, you will be glad you did. You will spend far less than on taxis, andthe convenience alone isworththe price of rental. Driving on the left is a lot easier than it sounds. Just have the passenger do the directions and remind you to keep left every time you turn. As the driver, do just that...drive. Leave everything else in the hands of the passenger.

I find driving on the left side of the road makes you a better driver as you concentrate on what you are doing. It does get more easy as time goes by yet caution remains.

Where do you guys park these rental cars overnight? I'm staying at Water Island and would love to rent a car for the week (its cheaper in the long run). But, Subbase/Crown Bay doesn't have availability. Any suggestions on a safe place to park the car when I'm not using it?

Staying on Water you can park in the Crown Bay parking lot with a pass. Just ask at the marina office and they will hook you up.
