Been looking for a car rental for our May trip...just wanted to pass this on.

We've rented from Budget twice before and from Dependable once.

Here are the prices I've came up with (this also includes Avis).

Budget: 2 door jeep wrangler (my favorite) 457.46

Avis : 398.45 for a compact SUV. This was through Orbitz and I'm not sure what a compact SUV is. Didn't really feel comfortable with that, but went with it for the price.

Dependable: 398.74, 2 door jeep wrangler.

Searched Avis on this board and found out that they are a company that do not allow their cars over onto STJ, so I cancelled that.

Dependable definetly had the best prices. They also allow you 2 drivers without an additional charge like other rental companies.

These prices include all taxes and everything else that they can put onto a rental car.

I'm going with Dependable. They will pick us up at the airport and they're really close and plus I don't have to deal with the one girl at Budget who gave us so much trouble two times we rented off of them. Actually, last time we only saw her when we dropped the Jeep off, but we were very nervous about running into her...she was that rude.

Dependable has other options too, like 4 door jeep wranglers, but they have hard tops and there's just something about having that convertible in the islands..we love it. They also have Jeep Commanders that fit 7 people, so that may be an options for some people.

Just wanted to pass this on.

The HERTZ thing is easy...............DO NOT RENT FROM THEM. I would definitely go with dependable, stay away from DISCOUNT, and if you're gonna rent on STJ, I would use C&C RENTAL, they''re kind of right behind the DMV. Easy walk from the Ferry dock, they let you have 2 drivers and they take CASH as well as Credit Cards!

ENJOY!!!!!

Hertz does not allow their vehicles over to STJ! Avis does, but there is a huge fee if they have to come and rescue you!
Hertz isn't BAD, I simply don't recommend them if you would like to go to STJ for a day and drive around. Driving around STJ is the better way to go in my eyes! You can go where you want, when you want, and do a self guided tour!

Does anyone know what the Barges charge now? Another tip in that regard is to do ONE WAY with the barge, not round trip! Reason being that this way you do not have to wait for YOUR barge if you do round trip!

Well...was able to get the 2 door wrangler from Dependable. They were very nice, but the first time I called, I didn't get the same girl as yesterday. The first girl I talked to quoted me about 70.00 higher then yesterday. I called back and talked to the Manager, Linda, who confirmed the priced that she quoted me yesterday.

I'm glad I'm going with Dependable instead of Budget. At least I don't have to worry about getting that girl again :o)

Hey Sherri!!

aww man, too late about the Hertz.. already rented from them and pre-paid (i think, will double check that) but thanks Dylan.. will definately keep looking if we're not already locked in with Hertz..

maybe we can just do an overnite in STJ and rent a car for those 2 days.. are there small hotels/inns that we can find just overnite lodging??

thanks! everyone is so helpful on this board 😀

cant wait cant wait!! weeee

cyn2008: if you're coming in high season, chances are that not only will an overnight accomodation be hard to find but a 2 day car rental will be even more difficult - even week-long car rentals get booked VERY fast in season on STJ and we're now getting into high season. You can certainly check out your options where that's concerned but your best bet (since Hertz doesn't permit their rental vehicles to go over to STJ) would be to take the passenger ferry from STT to STJ and then take a safari to whatever beaches appeal to you. You can easily beach-hop on the safaris. Cheers!

We have rented from Dependable on many occasions and have never had one problem!
This time I chose Avis. Hope it is ok
However, I did rent from wherever is by the ferry in downtown CA (cannot remember the name of it) and I messed up the bumper! When I turned it in there was no problem at all. They took care of everything! That is why a credit card is better than cash because you are automatically insured for damages.
If anyone knows the name of the car rental company next to the Downtown ferry, I would love to know it
