*HI,
I'M TRYING TO RENT A CAR FOR JULY 5-15. FROM THE 5-8 WE'D LIKE TO STAY IN ST THOMAS AND THE 8-15 WE WILL BE IN ST JOHN. SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT NOT ALL CAR COMPANIES ALLOW CAR RENTALS BETWEEN ISLANDS,I DID FIND THAT BUGDET DOES ALLOW YOU TO GO TO BOTH ISLANDS, BUT THEY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED WE RENT A JEEP. WHICH IS ABOUT 200.00 MORE THAN A REGULAR CAR RENTAL. I HAVENT TRAVELED TOO FAR OUT OF CRUZ BAY BUT HAVE DRIVEN IN ST THOMAS MANY TIMES IN A FORD FOCUS, DO YOU THINK WE REALLY SHOULD GO FOR THE JEEP OR WILL A REGULAR CAR BE OK?
THANKS
MATT

You'll see this answer posted many times on this message board...
If you're out and about when a heavy shower hits on St John, you'll appreciate 4WD while manuevering up and down the narrow, winding roads. They really become slick!!!

We have used both a Jeep and a small sedan on St. John. To begin with getting on and off the car barge with a Jeep is much easier. Secondly the vast majority of the roads you will travel on St. John are good roads where a sedan will be fine unless, as stated above, it starts to rain. But don't be deceived by a Jeep on a slippery roadway. 4x4s are usually the first thing we see off the roads during bad storms here in the Northeast. But Jeeps certainly have the ability to get around on those slippery roads safely if you use common sense. There are also some roads on St. John that quickly turn into what I would call trails or "off road" where a Jeep is certainly better. We're renting our Jeep for the first week of July from Dependable and bringing it with us to St. John. The second week we're on St. Thomas and we are switching to a sedan.
