Im getting ready to make reservations in STX (Chenay Bay, I think) for June and I have been having so much fun reading about beaches, Buck Island tours, restuarants, etc. On our trip it will be myself and husband and our 2 teenage sons. We will splurge on some dinners for sure, but I'd like to pick your brains as where we can go for a casual sandwich, burger, salad for a decent price.
Of course I know there's fast food but Im looking for something that will give us a taste of the islands too. Cheeseburgers in Paradise and Changes in Latitudes are 2 on our list. Any other ideas?? My husband and I went to STX MANY years ago (stayed at the old Grapetree Bay hotel which was blown away by hurricane Hugo)
and one of our most memorable dinners was some guy with a grill with chicken and a cooler of beer on one of the side streets in C'stead. It may sound funny to some, but it was a great time. We love that sort of out of the way stuff.
Sorry to be so long winded....Im getting excited.

hi Phyl

Def. check out Kim's restaurant in Christinsted. It is near ScotiaBank on King Street as you head into town, on the left side of the road. They have the BEST local food. Service will be slow if they are busy but it is worth the wait! Also check out Singh's Roti shack in Christiansted, and Harvey's Restaurant (only open for lunch) All will give you the best local flavor at a great price! For a splurge, definitely go to Kendrick's restaurant in Christiansted. They are always excellent and the setting is beautiful (courtyard seating in a historic house) All the best to you!!

Hello Phyl,

Not local food but here are a few more casual places to eat.

Off the Wall, Fort Christian Brew Pub, Breezez and Golden Rail. I don't remember the menu at Goldren Rail all that well but they might have had some local dishes.

Some casual places to stop in (mostly bar food and snacks, but also some great seafood chowder, conch fritters, etc.) include:

The Full Moon Bar at Cane Bay (north shore)
Off the Wall (north shore)
Lobster Reef (north shore)
Ft. Christian Brew Pub (C'sted)
Rum Runners (C'sted)
Case Place (C'sted at Gallows Bay)
Golden Rail (C'sted at Gallows Bay in the C'sted Marina)
The Deep End Bar (Tamarind Reef at Green Cay, east of C'sted)
Changes in l'Attitude (west end - north of F'sted)
Rainbow Beach (west end - north of F'sted)
China Jade (Sunny Isle)
Cheese Burgers in Paradise - of course! (east of C'sted)
South Shore Cafe (south shore in the Great Pond area)
H2O (at the Hibiscus Resort, west of C'sted)
Luncheria - casual Mexican food (downtown C'sted)

not sure what it's called, but for local food there's a Puerto Rican open air chicken restaurant in La Reine across from Pizza Hut/McDonald's/Pueblo

For great food (if the chef cooperates that night) try:

Tutto Bene (C'sted)
Kendricks (C'sted)
Sunset Grill (west end - north of F'sted)
Savant (C'sted)
Duggan's Reef (east end on the north shore - Cotton Valley)
The Galleon (Tamarind Reef at Green Cay, east of C'sted)
Cafe Bleu (C'sted)
Elizabeth's (at the Cormorant Hotel west of C'sted)

I know I'm missing more places, but it's not hard to find something to eat on STX!

The chicken place is the LaReine Chicken Shack. Great rotisserie chicken and sides. Very reasonable.

I can't believe nobody ever mentions Pleasants. Just a few feet off the boardwalk in Christiansted. Great "bar food" for about three quarter the price of anything on the boardwalk. Local flavor for clientel. Rum and Cokes were a buck and a quarter last year, a buck the year before. Very clean, open air. I think it's the best kept secret, for that, "must have injection of barfood" after tasting the unfamiliar for awhile. I've always just had the great burgers, onion rings and such but last year my kids liked to hang out there and they said they had great Mai Mai (sp?)

Turtles has great sub type sandwiches. Been to the Fredricksted one but not Christiansted. Shennanigans (sp again) for breakfast.

there is an excellent puerto rican place in the back corner of the united shopping plaza, down past the western union store. Not sure of the name, but was there lst year and ate there every day. Very reasonable and VERY tasty local take out.
