*Hi Islander,
We are considering spending a week in the VI over the Christmas/New Years Holiday 2006 - I have been researching the islands and each time I look at something else I am more confused. I know that right now there isn't any ferry service between St Thomas and St Croix will that change in the future. Is there any one island that you can recommend along with a place to stay. We were in St Thomas just for the day in November and loved it but I have heard good things about St John as well. I would appreciate any information that you could give to me! We are a family of four - possibly five if my mom decides to come with and might be traveling with another family of four. Thanks ~

Do you have a budget? That is a very expensive time to visit. You'll pay a premium for accomodations at that time, so it is best to really understand your budget before we make suggestions.

I was thinking around $5,000 for my family is that even possible during this time of year. I got a price from my TA for a different island in the caribbean and she quoted my around $7500 for an all inclusive - I am not necessarily looking for an all inclusive...just somewhere nice to get away. I received an email from Sugar Beach condos in St Croix and they didn't look to bad but I don't know much about the island! Thanks for your help!

Andrea,

$5000 for everything including airfare, meals etc.? Depending on your stateside location, Christmas airfare to the USVI for four can easily eat up half of your $5000 budget.

Most of St. John rentals are villas, many of those are already booked for Christmas by holiday regulars, and most of the STJ villas that can accomodate four will likely be out of your budget over the holidays.

STT is a more affordable alternative because the island has more condo options than STJ. You can still spend your days on STJ if you wish.

The ferry between St. Croix and St. Thomas has not yet made an appearance, it is impossible to predict its status next December, and the projected rates I saw are pretty steep. St. Croix is the most affordable of the three islands and there is plenty there to keep you busy for a week.

Sorry ~ the $5,000 is for air and hotel/condo only. I figured another $1500 - $2,000 for spending!

I concur with dntw8up. If this includes airfare and meals, it will take some serious research to get a decent place for that budget.

Andrea, go check the airfare rates and see what they look like now for your dates, just to get an idea. Then budget about $50 per person/per day for meals, which is $200/day or $1200-$1400 per week.

If you get a deal on air and you can get it for about $450 r/t for 4 people (inclusive of the high taxes and fees, which run about $100 per ticket on an avergae ticket)= so that's $1,800.

$1,800 - Air (if you are lucky)
$1,400 - meals
$ 300 - car (you can get it for less, but STJ will be more)
_______
$3,500

That leaves you $1,500 for accomodations or $250/nt.

You can get into a 2br condo on STT for about that in high season, but I am not sure what premium they add for holidays (some don't add premiums, most do).
