Is it pretty safe to just show up in mid-July without reservations and get a platform tent? I would love to be able to keep my plans flexible in case I get a wild hair to head off somewhere else. Thanks for any advice!

You need to make a reservation ahead of time. I would never risk it on STJ. There are really no other options if you want to camp like that on island.

Lots of people take family vacations during the summer when kids are out of school so if you don't reserve you may not get a site.

Thanks for the advice, I will go ahead and book a tent and leave exploring other locations for a future trip. This will be a short trip anyway.
